The ST Croix Premier is the only rod, that was highly recommended here that is horrible. I had several that had numerous guide insert issues. The fellas here always steered me to good stuff, but his rod is not worth it.

Fenwick HMX 6'6" or 7' med action   90 bucks, warranty not an issue mine is 6 years old without a hitch.

What Muddy said !!!

Besides Fenwick HMX, try Shimano Compre ($90), Team Daiwa S ($100),Falcon Lowrider($100-130), All Star ASR($100), Team All Star IM10(100). Cabelas XML or BPS Extreme are not bad either.

It would be good if you could have the rod in your hand before you buy, to see if you like the "feel"of it.Even better if you could get your reel on it, see how it balances out.

It's all a matter of personal prefference...

I have a $110 Shimano Teramar 7' I bought for $99 for inshore saltwater. I prefer it over my much more expensive St. Croix Avid for Bass fishing and I constantly fish worms in Florida and land over 5-lb Bass with it. You really can't go wrong with a Teramar, which is about the only Shimano spinning rod that's worth a crap.

I spent 2 hours in BPS over the winter sorting through all the choices and walked away with a BPS Pro Lite Finnese 7ft medium action. For $99 bucks this rod is balanced, light, sensitive and with nice backbone. I own 9 different brands of rods and this one rates right up there with my Kistlers, All Stars and Fenwicks . I also wound up buying the 7ft casting version too.

I have several St. Croix Premiers a couple of them I've had for 15 years and never have I had any problems with guide inserts or anything else. I have other rods in that price range too, All Star, BPS, Fenwick. All nice rods but I like the Premiers much better.

FENWICK HMG  one of the most underrated rods there is , a fine choice I am sure you will get years of service from it

The Insert Issue: Is well documented here and a couple of other forums. The Cabelas i bought them from exchanged the first 2 then i just switched them out, including one I got from Senko 77 which thrw the tip insert in 3 trips . They had amny issues with this.

I have a Shimano Compre 6'6", medium, fast.  It's a great pole for under $100.  I use a St. Croix Avid now as my #1 pole, but the Compre is on the boat most of the time as backup or rigged different.

I've never owned a Premier, but fished one a couple times.  It seemed nice, but I was gunshy on getting one because of some of the documented insert problems.  If I need another pole in $100 range, I'll get another Compre or consider the stretch to the Shimano Crucial.

I love my Daiwa Shock. Its only 15 bucks but it preforms like its 60 or 70 bucks.

Have you tried a 60-70 dollar reel. Have you ever fought a fish enough to strip line and see how long the drag lasts have you ever dropped that reel :;)
