TournyFish001 Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 So what gear ratio are you guys using for traps- I am using a 7:1 but at times think I'd be better off with a 6.2:1 or in that naborhood. Quote
Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted March 19, 2008 Super User Posted March 19, 2008 I believe I read an article on here last winter about fishing lipless cranks. The article went into depth about a common mistake a lot of anglers make is thinking they have to have a "burner" reel to fish lipless cranks. That was me. I was fishing 6:1 reels as fast as I could. I took the articles recommendation and started throwing cranks on my slower 5:1 reels. I easily caught more bass on lipless cranks than any other year. I am a believer now. Quote
TournyFish001 Posted March 19, 2008 Author Posted March 19, 2008 cool- yeah I am a very aggressive reaction bait bass fisherman ;D- I think slowing me down with a lower gear may be to my benefit at times. I will pick up the jig and in very desperate measures the spinning gear :'( Quote
Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted March 19, 2008 Super User Posted March 19, 2008 Well I went to try to find my post last year about my first outing with fishinng lipless cranks with a lower gear ratio reel ...... couldn't find it :-/ Then I went to try to find the article on here. After a quick look and I couldn't find that either. I did however read an article explaing to do the exact opposite of what I do : ;D. I must have got this idea someplace. All I know it has worked for me Quote
Triton20XSD Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 I have been throwing my lipless cranks on a 6.2:1 Curado. I have now purchased a 6.4:1 Revo Premier that I will be throwing my lipless cranks on this year.....it shoudn't be much different. I do own 2 7:1 reels but have not thrown lipless cranks with them. Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted March 20, 2008 Super User Posted March 20, 2008 I use my 6.4:1 reels for lipless cranks, however in one of the "Bass Pro's" episodes KVD said he uses 5.1:1. I guess it's just a personal preference. Falcon Quote

The Next KVD Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 The colder the water the slower the gear ratio aka 5.1:1 Curado, The warmer the water the faster the gear ratio aka 6.2:1 Citica, And then for Schooling fish were I need to really get my bait back after its left the strike zone a 7.1 Curado Is the way to go! KevO Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 I have been throwing them on my 7.1:1 curado since I bought it in january. Even in 40* water I have tearing them up on the burner reel. All I need is a little sun and some clouds and its trap time!!!!! Quote
