SV1000 Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 I finally received my 300 yd spool of 20lb Sufix Hi-Vis Yellow Braid from Cabelas and loaded my three reels. I've used it about two weeks and this is what I think so far. As as far as I can tell, the yellow is not significantly more visible than the green Power Pro but I may try red next. The backlashes are worse and harder to pick. I lost one buzzbait this week when I backlashed and snapped the line. I lost one fish and a Horny Toad today when the line apparently broke at the snap. I still had the knot so I think the line broke. It seems to fray less than Power Pro. It is a little quieter to me than Power Pro. All in all I like braid better than mono and probably won't go back. It is too expensive to quit using it now so I will finish out the season before trying Power Pro Red; unless I pick up a couple of dedicated catfish rigs and can respool with the Sufix I have now. Super User senile1 Posted March 12, 2008 Super User Posted March 12, 2008 It seems to fray less than Power Pro.It is a little quieter to me than Power Pro. I agree with the two statements above in your post. My experience has been completely different from yours in the other aspects you mention. With PowerPro, if you get a bad backlash, you fray the line when you pick it out. Otherwise, I see no difference in picking out backlashes. As for the Sufix breaking, I've never experienced that either. If you fail to remove a slight overrun or backlash completely and make another cast with a lure that has a lot of mass, the line can sometimes catch itself and then the mass of the lure will break it. That will happen with any line, even 20 lb braid. Could this be what is occurring with your Sufix line? I really like PowerPro. I switched to Sufix Performance Braid about a year and a half ago, and I believe it is a notch above PowerPro. Both are good braids. But you know what they say about opinions . . . Quote
Super User Alpster Posted March 12, 2008 Super User Posted March 12, 2008 I am a power pro fan also. You know, if it ain't broke.... I have tried Stren Super Braid and it works fine. Comparable to PP but not any better. I would use either if it were on sale. LOL I will try Suffix when my current supply of PP dries up. I can't comment on Suffix because I haven't used it. The other braids I have tried are "Gorilla" and Tuff line. They are both good and behave very well, but have not made me want to switch from PP. The other advantage to Power Pro is availability. You can find it in several lb tests almost anywhwere. WalMart, Kmart and the dinestores have it. When I want to try Suffix, I will have to order it on line. Even Dick's doesn't stock it here. Tokyo Tony Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 I just bought a spool of 20lb yellow Sufix too! Haven't tried it yet because I'm waiting to get my reel back from Reelmech, but as soon as I try it out, I'll post a review. I do like the idea that it's quieter than Power Pro, and the fact that it's 6 strand instead of 4 strand...can't wait Quote
macmaster761 Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 i love power pro, only other thing i've used is the ugly braid, which in my experiences is equally as good on a spinning outfit Quote
Super User FishTank Posted March 13, 2008 Super User Posted March 13, 2008 I used both and prefer PowerPro. I did like the Sufix braid though. PowerPro seems to last longer and also seems to have a thinner diameter. Both fade about the same but the Sufix seemed get sort of fuzzy after awhile and the knot strength was not as good as I would like it. But again, I did like Sufix but not as well as the PowerPro. Fish Chris Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 I use spinning reels with my braided line.... So I never have to pick out backlashes ;-) Then, with a slightly softer rod, and a properly set drag system, you shouldn't ever snap anything off.... most importantly, fish. BTW, you have made a GREAT decision about going to braid. This was "the biggest improvement in my fishing" in my entire 40 years. Peace, Fish Quote

Cory20 Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 Would you consider upping your braid to a minimum of 30 lb test on your casting gear? The heavier test should still cast well, be easier to pick out pack lashes, and have a higher tensile (I think that's the right word, shock strenght). There's not a lot of stretch, a line that might be able to slowly dead lift 20 lbs will pop a lot sooner being shock loaded. This combined with any weak points, ie. nicks, your knot, old backlashes, and the rest is history. Quote
SV1000 Posted March 16, 2008 Author Posted March 16, 2008 I needed to do maintenance on my Cruxis and after cutting some line after a nasty backlash I filled it back up with my old but new Power Pro Green tonight. So I will have two Pinnacle LC100's with Sufix and my Cruxis with Power Pro for some direct comparisons. I will tell you what's chapping my butt, the cheapo Pinnacles are outcasting my Cruxis! I lost another fish and a Horny Toad this morning on Sufix, no speed clips or swivels. I was fishing some new growth vegetation in about 18" of water and I felt a tap, I waited for a second and felt tension and let him have it. The end of the Sufix was frayed. I have used the Uni-Knot for years and I don't think this is the problem but it's possible. However, I don't recall losing a single bait or fish while using the PP. I don't want to change more than one element at a time so once I settle on the line, I may try the Palomar knot for a while. Cory, that is definitely what happened, I had not picked the backlash clean and the next cast popped the line. Not the lines fault of course. Quote
Ryan_Johnson Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 Here's a couple of things that I've noticed with braid. A uniknot can cut itself off. If there is any gap in the hook eyelet, the knot will find it and pull through when you set the hook. Quote
Garnet Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 That means you have a hook problem and should contact your manufacture. Take a pair of plier and sqweeze. Garnet Quote
JT Bagwell Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 PowerPro is the only braid I use now (for about the last 5-6 years anyway). It is super tough and very dependable. I never have to worry about PowerPro breaking when I pulling a bass out of a brush pile or lilly pads. JT Bagwell Quote
