lakeman Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 My teenager is really beginning to enjoy fishing and it is time to get him new tackle. We do most of our fishing on a lake in Western New York and fish for bass, walleye, crappie. (Muskies are a remote possibility.) We typically use crankbaits, jerkbaits, and worms. After spending hours going through numerous websites, I think I have narrowed my choice for a new rod and reel to the following: Daiwa Tierra 2500 Spinning reel Daiwa Tierra TD-TR 701MLFS Spinning rod 7' medium/light fast OR Fenwick Techna AV Spinning rod 7' medium/light fast OR Fenwick HMG Spinning rod GS66ml 6'6" medium/light I want really a good quality combination that can be used now (without frustrations of a lot of birdsnests, etc.) as well as something that won't be outgrown in a short period of time. I had been thinking about Shimano Stradic 2500 reel -- which seems comparable and some people love one or the other, the most frequent complaint being birdsnests. So, I'll stay with the Daiwa. The Daiwa Sol line seems to be overkill at this time. So, I think I am focused on the right rod to go with the Tierra. I can see the merits of combining the rod / reel as the manufacturer paired them, but Fenwick seems to have a great reputation (as does St. Croix Avid series, except it is more expensive). Any advice is welcomed and appreciated. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted March 13, 2008 Super User Posted March 13, 2008 WELCOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why are you so concerned about birdnest's in a spinning reel ? I've never had concerns about birdnest's using spinning gear only had that problem with bait casting gear? I would suggest to go with at least a medium rod instead of a med light since you will use it to fish for bass. A lot of people won't use anything but a med-heavy spinning rod . Quote
Super User Gone_Phishin Posted March 13, 2008 Super User Posted March 13, 2008 If it's going to be primarily a walleye/crappie rod and sometimes bass, I'd go for the ML. If it's going to be a bass rod, and sometimes walleye/crappie, I'd go for a M powered rod. The Techna AV is a very nice rod, and fits your criteria better than the other rods you mentioned. I say that because the M powered AV's have a larger window as far as rod specs are concerned (for what you're fishing). The M powered, fast action AV's are rated from 4-12lb line and 1/8-5/8 lure weight. The HMG medium powered rods are 6-15lb line and 1/4-3/4 oz. If you fish all three of the species you mentioned pretty much equally, and you're looking for one rod to do it all, the medium powered Techna AV's are an excellent option. They have three medium powered, fast action models: 6'0"; 6'6"; and 7'0". As I said, these are very nice rods. My brother has the 6'6" L model (1/8-1/2), and it every spring for Lindy rigs when walleye fishing. It's very sensitive and a pleasure to fish with. Hope this helps. Quote
Super User Gone_Phishin Posted March 13, 2008 Super User Posted March 13, 2008 On a side note, If you are looking for a spinning rod to primarily fish the cranks and jerkbaits you mentioned, the Techna AV has a 7'0" model that has a moderate action. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 13, 2008 Super User Posted March 13, 2008 Among the choices listed, I suggest the Fenwick Techna AV AVS70MF. BTW, Welcome aboard! 8-) Quote

Ive used it with 8-10 lb test reeling 30 inch pikes. Very nice rod. Quote

Popeye Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 Welcome to BR - the BEST bass fishing forum on the Net, IMO!! I really like the Fenwick rods and the HMG in medium heavy would be great for your son. I also like the Pflueger Trion, President, and Supreme spinning reels. You might want to look into them as well as the Diawas. Quote
