A few weeks ago, someone on here mentioned they were swapping out their stock Revo gears for some 5:1 gears.

fivebasslimit, was it you?

Anyway, who was it, and what were the results?  Inquiring minds wanna know!

If you guys swap out the gears, change the spool, replace the handle and paint the frame, maybe you can find a Shimano decal to complete the package!

It was fivebass. You can call the Abu service department and order the gears for the swap. I'm not sure how easy it is to do however.

If your buddies made a freakin' left-hand reel in low profile that wasn't gigantic with low ratio gears, I wouldn't be having this problem. ;)

Gear ratio too high ;)

Don't look at the ratio, look at the inches retrieved per turn of the crank (IPC). You'll discover that Calcutta 50 is one of the slower reels out there. I'm going from memory, but I believe it's only 16" per crank. The small spool, you know?

It was....I got two sets. The local reel guy is switching them right now. I'll let you know what happens, I'm looking forward to getting them back.

I'm waiting for an update on 5BL's conversion, too.

Right now I'm seriously considering ordering some 4.7:1 gears for my Abu EXT Pros.

If it is built like a shimano there are only 2 gears to switch and it is about a 10 minute job.  I bought a 3.8:1 curado for cranking and hated it.  So I switched out to 6.3:1.  It was quick and easy.

Seems like it should just be the pinion gear and drive gear.   But IIRC someone at Tackle Tour said it required a few other parts, maybe some washers or something.

i am by no means an expert or anything, but wouldnt it be easier to just reel slower?

Hopefully I am not hijacking this thread but in what sitiuations do you want low ratio?

A low gear ratio gives the reel more power. This comes into play with deep diving crankbaits and heavy lures. For some, it's about slow retrieve. I use these reels (Shimano CTE200GT) on a jig rod and a glass rod (Lamiglas SR705R).

I'm also interested in the gear swap.  Keep us posted, especially on part numbers!   8-)

If you do much more than a few casts, it allows you to keep a cadence.  Some like it because the reduced effort to dive bigger baits.  I'm one who has trouble slow rolling for any length of time...  a few casts, sure- no problem but some guys crank and swimbait all day.

Five Bass Limit,

What model Revo are you getting the gears swapped out on?  Do you know if the same process can be done on the Revo S-L by chance?

Thanks.

Check the schematics on the Revo S and S-L and see of the gear and pinion part numbers are the same.  If so, it probably can be done.

The S lefty should switch over just the same. You can call Abu Customer Service to make sure. I finally got one back and I sent the other to Jimzee for a quicker fix. I'll be throwing the first one around some tomorrow. It's now crankbait time so my season just officially started.

I'll let you guys know what happens.

Got to throw the 5.4:1 Revo today for about 3 hours with a trap and a few different LC cranks. Everything seems real smooth like it was before and I could definitely tell the difference in the gear. One spool rotation per crank may not seem like a big deal to some of you but as a serious crankbait guy, I'm much happier cranking at my usual speed with the new gears rather than reeling a little slower with the HS gears. Everything is back to normal now when I pick up the crankbait.

I would recommend the gear swap if the 6.4:1 gears seem a little fast for you to crank with. Only problem is they are $26 plus shipping per set, so on a Revo S, you're making a $100 reel into a $135 reel. I may get one more set for one of my SX's next. If we can talk Abu into making a 4.7:1 or lower, we'll really be talkin' then.

Jimzee is swapping gears in one of my other Revo's as we speak.

I've heard the rumor that Abu will be offering 5.4:1 Revos sometime this spring.
