Hey, I just bought this reel, and it feels beautiful. The only thing that caught my attention was when your reeling, the reel makes a very quiet "humming" type sound I guess I'd describe it as. Now this may be normal, I thought I'd ask to see if the rest of you guys who own this reel have the same thing, or is the reel silent when retreiving for the rest of you?

The reason I ask this is because Ive used reels that make this humming sound over a period of time, due to friction inside the reel, when originally they were silent. Now the sound isn't loud at all, but it is present. Is this just normal with this reel? I am not looking for suggestions on how to eliminate this problem, I am merely looking to see if this is normal with this reel, or if it is indeed a silent reel and I got a defective product. Please let me know because I did not purchase the warranty, so after a month is up I cannot return this reel. Thanks a bunch.

I have the same reel and I have not noticed any humming sound at all.  You might try a drop or two of oil in the maintenance port.  Also, is it spooled?  I have noticed a difference in feel when there is no line on this reel.  It seems much smoother with line on it.

NO!

Absolutely not! The reel probably came with some Shimano grease which you might add through the port, but oil is for lubricating the exterior components of the reel.

I have done this with all my of my Shimano spinning reels without any issues.  I will put, per the instructions from Shimano, one drop a few times a year.  It tends to improve things greatly but this not to replace a yearly cleaning and maintenance.

This is from the instructions for my new Stradic 2500FI

Maintenance Port

This is a great feature for easy maintenance.  Keep your Stradic in great working condition by directly oiling the inside mechanisms without taking the reel apart through the Maintenance Port.  Make your Stradic perform in tip-top condition.

Well, I could be wrong!   ;)

I hope ReelMech comments on this thread.

Me too! I was assuming the maintenance port on my Saros F was for oiling?

I hear a humming on one of mine, but I wouldnt call it grinding.  Perhaps some line or dirt got under the spool? or in circle that the bail spins on... I keep up on mine in terms of oiling the port and aside from the noise, its performed wonderfully for 3 years or so.

Well if your reel has been good for 3 years you must have the older Stradic. He has the new FI series. I dont know if what he has going on would be the same in an older Stradic.

This reel made the sound immediately after coming out of the box, so I don't think its dirt/line. Should I return it? The sound is very low, just want to know if its normal or not.

My FI doesn't make any humming noise, only normal reel-related sounds.  If it sounds harmful to the reel, I'd return it.  Otherwise, if it just sounds like a normal sound, I wouldn't worry about it.  Down the road if it fails due to being defective, Shimano will stand by their product.

Like Road Warrior told you earlier , they have a one year warrenty on the reel. I didn't realize they had a warrenty that you could buy.

Shimano will stand by their product even if I didn't purchase the warranty?

I don't know anything about "purchasing a warranty".

One year is the manufacturer's warranty as stated in

the link I posted. However, Shimano will do much better

than that if there is ever a problem. This is a company

that's has built a reputation over a period of decades

and stands by their products. If there is something wrong,

Shimano will work with you to get it resolved.

Where did you buy it that they were selling a warranty?

Oh, that is just a replacement warranty through Dick's. They will replace it for free within 1 or 2 years no matter what. They work with a third party and will do a one time replacement. Shimano will warranty that reel for a year (will stand behind it for much longer than that) like RW said.

The humming sound you're referring to may be the normal sound you would expect from a spinning reel. It's hard to say without actually hearing it. Spinning reels generally shouldn't make any "noise" but none of them that I've ever used have been completely silent. Hope that makes sense. But, you could go back to Dick's with the reel and just see if you could check a couple of them out to see if the sound you're hearing is common to all of them. The Stradics I have make a bit of a "whirring" sound that is normal for a spinning reel. I really only hear it if I'm listening for it. But, again, I would just see if you could sample a couple of them at Dicks just to see if what you're hearing is normal.

Sorry for the late reply working a custom rod and servicing reels.... ;)

Some spinning reels make the whirring sound as Saladmander stated. It is a result of the bail system on the rotor (bail wire and bail arms) and spinning at high speed.  :o

Now for the maintenance port.... :-?

Ok yes the manual says it is a special feature, and probably one of the features that helped you choose the reel. But when you remove the port screw, you don't see anything but a white or gray idler gear, this gear drives the worm gear, that drives the in & out oscillations of the spool axal. Now when you put oil in the port you are basically oiling the teeth of that idler gear. It will help for a bit (main reason they have you doing it multiple times over a season)...  ;)

IMPO stay out of it, oil what you can see outside the reel (crank support bearings both sides, crank paddles, line roller, etc.), and send them off to a quality service center once a season to be properly cleaned and lubricated inside....

Just my .02¢

Tight Lines!!!!!
