Davis Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 Need a crankbait style rod. Looking at the BPS Crankin stick 7ft Medium and also the SHimano Clarus 6'6" Medium power Medium Fast action. Both are 59.99 and in my price range for just starting out cranking. Thoughts? The Shimano Clarus will be cheaper in the end with free shipping from ***. THe BPS Crankin stick will cost me around 70 after shipping and rod fee. Quote
Styx Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 If you're willing to spend $70 for the BPS rod with all the shipping fees......then consider the 7' Shimano Clarus (CSC-70M) as well. With 5% sales tax and free shipping from TW you're talking $73.50. Quote
djmax22 Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 BPS usually has the cranking stick on sale at some point during the year. My buddy picked one up for $30 last year. Quote
tyrius. Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 Also, if you can wait the Crankin' Stick goes on sale regularly. I bought mine for like 30 bucks. So if you can wait a while you'll save some cash. Other than that, I've never held the shimano rod so I can't compare the two. Quote

Davis Posted March 4, 2008 Author Posted March 4, 2008 Mainly a shore fisherman. What is the positives and the negatives for the two sizes that I'm having trouble on deciding. 7 foot 6'6" Going to be cranking mostly DT4s, DT6s, and Bandit footloose, 100s, and 200s. With an occasional lipless crank thrown in. Quote
jrhennecke Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 I have used the BPS crankin' stick for awhile now and like them very much. I think they are excellent rods for the $$$. Quote
moby bass Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 I have the 6'6" Clarus, M MF like you are considering. I purchased it late last year, so I really haven't had the opportunity to fish it a lot. I compared many other rods, including Gander Mtns. The Shimano won out for weight, balance, action, in the store. I had my Revo SC on it last year and, the little bit I fished it, it threw cranks a mile and handled nicely. I didn't like the real high speed of the Revo so I have since put a Cabela's Prodigy on it, but haven't fished it yet. Winter hangs on. Quote

I went with the 6'6" crankin stick because A) I'm short, I want it to fit easily in my car, and C) I think 6'6" is already long for casting from shore with trees, brush, and anything else in the way. As far as I know the main downside is distance but since you're not throwing deep divers distance isn't the primary concern. Quote
sal669 Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 First off, every company rates their rods differently. So med power Shimano is not the same as a med. BPS or other brand. I own a Clarus 6-6 MH and it is faster than what I like even for spinnerbaits (I preffer a BPS Graphite Series for SBs, it has a slower action than the Clarus). For crankbaits I would not use anything faster than "moderate". Sure, you have great "feel" of the lure with a faster action rod, but that is not what you want in a CB rod. You want a rod that has enough "give" to allow the bass to enhale the CB and once the fish is hooked, to keep it hooked. A softer rod will give the fish less chances to ripp the thin wire trebles out of his mouth. That is more important if the fish just bumps the CB, and the treble hooks the outside of the mouth. You will have a lot more fish throw your CB if you are using a faster rod. That being said, my vote goes to the "Cranking stick". Heck, I'd rather have a BPS Graphite (at this moment $29.99, but it goes on sale often for 19.99) than a Clarus for CBs. It's softer at the same rating. Legth wise, I think you'll do fine with a 6-6. Just my $.02 Quote
bronzeback01 Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 I have never used a bps crankin stick but i have owned a bps johnny morris signature and signature elite they were very lite and very impressive . if the crankin stick is 1/2 the rod i'd go w/ that. PS love shimano reels HATE their rods. Quote
bedman Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 I have a BPS crankin' stick that I use and have not had any problems with it. My only regret is that I didn't buy the 7' version because now I do a lot of deep cranking. If you're using it for primarly small cranks, I would stick to the 6'-6" version. Quote
Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted March 5, 2008 Super User Posted March 5, 2008 I've fished three season with a BPS Crankin Stick and I'm very pleased with it. I have the 7' Med. with an Abu Garcia Record RCN40, it's a very good shallow crankbait set-up. You can't beat the price either. I've never fished the Clarus so I an't give an opinion. Falcon Quote
WIII-60 Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 I think the crankin' stick is on sale right now. Quote
Davis Posted March 6, 2008 Author Posted March 6, 2008 Maybe in stores but I'm no where near a Bass Pro. Online they are still 59.99. Quote
tkite16 Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 Buddy uses crankin sticks. I've fooled with them a little bit , feels pretty good for the money. Quote
