fishfearme Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 what type of line do you put on your baitcaster? lb test, brand, type? Quote
HesterIsGod Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 30 lb braid, 8 and 12 lb fluorocarbon, 10 and 17 pound mono Quote
d.hark Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 to general of a question. Would need to know what types and weights lures your using, what type of pattern, water condtions etc etc... But I would say you cant go wrong with something like 20lb braid for an all around line. Great strength, small diameter for long casts and very sensitive for worms and jigs. If braid isnt your thing a good flouro, co-poly or mono in the 15-18lb would be a good start Quote
IL_Bassman Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 Well after reading how much RW suggests Yo Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft I finally bought a spool of 12lb and 8lb test. I spooled all my reels up today and just got to cast them out in the yard. I was impressed though. I haven't fished with the line yet. I can cast this line twice as far as I could with Trilene XL. If fishing with the line is half as good as the castability (sp?), I'll be happy! Quote
GitRDoneIke23 Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 I use 14lb. Berkley Fireline (it's a braid) or 14lb. Stren Super Braid I use Mono and Flurocarbon every once in a while. Super User Wayne P. Posted March 4, 2008 Super User Posted March 4, 2008 Muddy, Super Braid is a Stren brand. Spiderwire is a different brand. The Original Spiderwire braid has a smaller diameter per pound test than the other brands of braid. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted March 4, 2008 Super User Posted March 4, 2008 baitcasters-- 10#mono and 30# Power Pro spinning-- 8# and 10 # mono and 8/1 Power Pro Quote
GobbleDog Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 8 lb Power Pro Despite the fact that I fish a lot of clear water, I don't use fluerocarbon leaders. I tried em for a while, but didn't notice much of a difference. Nowdays the only thing I do to the power pro is mark the first 6 feet or so with a perminate black marker, which IMO makes a slight difference in the visibility. Quote

LOW7681 Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 On my bait casting rigs: For carolina rigging and fishing "frogs" thru lily pads or other weeds use power pro 20-50# test. Most of the time I pitch drop baits (soft plastics and jigs) or use a senko type bait. I use primarily Stren Original in 14 or 17# test. It must be around thirty or more years ago that I started using Stren Original and in the ensuing years used almost of all of Berkley's lines and some of the p lines. Primary lines were Big Game and XT. More recently spent many years using Bass Pro Excel. Nice line, inexpensive, reasonably limp, usually tests close to its pound rating whereas most other lines break above. But like Big Game it has more stretch than most monofilament or copolymer lines. The end of this story is that in the past three years I have returned to Original Stren. It has a nice balance of abrasion resistance (may be one of the best of monos), lower stretch, and pound test per diameter. I do carry a reel loaded with 10# test Seaguar Carbon Pro fluorocarbon for situations where the water is extremely clear and nothing else seems to be working. For spinning gear use primarily 10# Power Pro with a fluorocarbon leader as almost all of my spinning rod use for bass is for smallies in rock laden water. Quote
