Super User Root beer Posted October 11, 2007 Super User Posted October 11, 2007 Anyone ever use the gunfish? if so how is the action on that bad boy? Thinking about picking one or two up this winter and was wondering how good the action is. Quote
basspro48 Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 I had 2, but I lost both of em to stripers a while back, and they are a pretty good topwater. The action can be described as a cross between a popper and a sammy, it walks but it also pops and spits like crazy. Not an amazing bait but they catch fish and its probably not a bad idea to have one or two in your box. Quote
rfrazier Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 I found one on the beach; switched out the hooks. Tried walking it like I would my spooks, but didn't have any luck. The action looked/felt weird; don't know if I was doing it right. Havn't given it any more tries lately. Quote
Guest avid Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 The gunfish has mad walking action. I don't know why anyone would want to change out the hooks on an quality lure like a Lucky craft., Perhaps that is why it wouldn't walk for you. It really swings wide if you want it to. I like to fish it with shorter splashier side to side motion. I'll jump it out of the water and really make it look like a panicked bait fish. Totally cool and productive bait. Quote
The_Natural Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 I see Gerald Swindle choose the Gunfish 90% of the time over Lucky Crafts other offerings. It kind of works like a chug bug that walks better. Quote

Totally cool and productive bait. Come to think of it, it didn't even have hooks. And I doubt lucky crafts hooks would hold up too well to floating around in the ocean and sitting on a beach. I got it to walk, the action was just too much for me. :-? Quote
Super User Root beer Posted October 11, 2007 Author Super User Posted October 11, 2007 I think baitmonkey will be calling this winter. Quote
Bass Hammer Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 The gunfish is pretty cool. It's not my favorite bait...but I like that I can walk and pop etc. on the same bait. Usually I will switch to a different bait once I get a feeling for what they are looking for. Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 I have one, but for me the dumb little chug bug by storm outfishes the gunfish. There's no question that the LC Gunfish is a sharp looking bait, but in this case I think you are just as well served to get a Chug Bug. Quote
Super User Munkin Posted October 12, 2007 Super User Posted October 12, 2007 The gunnish outfishes all other walking baits for me. It has a more frantic action as opposed to the smooth side to side motion of a spook or sammy. Lucky craft just seems to outfish the other topwaters and this year 90% of the time I was using the gunnish 95 or the g-splash 65. Allen Quote
Super User T-rig Posted October 13, 2007 Super User Posted October 13, 2007 The gunnish catches fish, period! Quote
Guest avid Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 The gunnish catches fish, period! Couldn't have said it better myself. Don't give up on this lure. forget about the walking qualities. If you want a quality Lucky Craft walker you can't do better than the Sammy. No, the gunfish is an erratic, hopping jumping, panicked bait fish action. On the fun meter the gunfish is off the chart. I swear I can get that little sucker to dance. It is a bait that you can be totally creative with. Pretend you never fished a topwater before and have no idea what it's "supposed" to do. JUST FISH IT> Quote
Super User Root beer Posted October 13, 2007 Author Super User Posted October 13, 2007 I've seen a lot of baitfish jump around docks and stuff, but never got a fish to bite. So I guess it time to get something that can catch 'em. Quote

Guest avid Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Classic colors include the ghost minnow, american shad aurora black archer bee. but I wouldn't hesitate to use eggshell white, chartruese shad or anything in the LC catalogue. A good rule of thumb if your not sure, is to use a pattern similar to what you have confidence in with your other topwaters. Quote
