skeeterman24 Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 What is the best knot to use with Fluoro. I'm going to use fluoro this year almost excusivly this year. I know not to use a palomer knot and have had pretty good results with the trilene knot. Is the trilene knot the standard for Fluoro? Quote
GitRDoneIke23 Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 I'd say learn to tie the Palomer Knot. Quote
surfer Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 I know not to use a palomer knot and have had pretty good results with the trilene knot. (scratchin head) I have heard from lots of sources the Palomar is hard to beat with floro, mono, and braid. Quote
JKLOCK Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 Check out this thread on knots. http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1202529171'> http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1202529171 SeniorBasser Quote
Super User burleytog Posted February 29, 2008 Super User Posted February 29, 2008 What ever knot you use, lubricating the line/knot before cinching will ensure a quality knot. When tying a knot in flouro, the key is to lubricate properly (spit will suffice) and to cinch the knot S L O W L Y. Quote
Tpayneful Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 www.fishingclub.com just had a series called knot wars. They compared dry knots against each other on mono, fluoro and braid. The palomar knot actually won the contest. As long as you lubricate your knot before you cinch it down you will not have a problem. Quote
skeeterman24 Posted March 1, 2008 Author Posted March 1, 2008 The palomar knot it is then! I heard it didn't work well with fluoro but I never looked into it much since i never used it. Its the knot I always use so i'm glad to hear that. Thanks for the help again guys. Quote
HesterIsGod Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 Polamar knots are great for monofilament and braid, but it does not work well with Fluorocarbon line, it tends to crimp the line. I suggest using a trilene or san diego knot. I know not a lot of people will agree with me on this, so I did a little research. Aaron Martens on Fluorocarbon knots: "Many fishermen have tried fluorocarbon line, but quickly ditched it, complaining that it's brittle and breaks easily. Martens knows the solution. Most of the breaking problems is the knot," he said. "You have to tie a San Diego Knot or some kind of cinch knot, like the Trilene Knot. A Palomar is not good because it crimps the line. It crimps on top of itself and it will break." and here is the link where i got that quote: http://sports.espn.go.com/outdoors/bassmaster/columns/story?columnist=tipofthemonth_tt&page=b_col_bt_pro_tip_0211 Quote

I also read that it is because fluoro cuts through itself on a palomer knot Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted March 1, 2008 Super User Posted March 1, 2008 imho if your tieing a palomar with flouro and doing it correctly and it breaks you need to change to a good flouro like this one. Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted March 1, 2008 BassResource.com Administrator Posted March 1, 2008 I prefer the uni-knot. Have tested it against the palamar using line break machines and it won every time, regardless of line type. Quote
Tpayneful Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 Glenn, When you tested the knots on the machine, did each break above the rated line test? Were the lines wet or dry? Will these lines break differently when they are wet? Just wondering because the tests that I saw on knot wars were done on dry line with the Palomar rated as the best beating the uni knot and all others tested. Last year I saw Martins and Ike say that you shouldn't use a Palomar knot with Fluorocarbon lines. I used the improved clinch knot and hated it last year. I finally switched back to the Palomar. I think it will work fine if you lubricate it and tie it correctly. I am not trying to argue, I really am interested in your testing concidering it is different than what I have seen elsewhere. Quote
