I just started fishing again after a long time off. I just tried putting line on a new reel and am having trouble. First what type off knot do you use to tie the line on the spool, I couldn't get it tight enough to get it started threading on the reel. After I did get it on the reel when I hit the button to release the line it back lashed right on the spool.  :'(

Bait Cast reels always takes some time to get used too. I start out my spool with a nice tight square knot (2 over hand knots)  but I don't know if thats the correct way to do it.

As for learning how to use a bait caster.... Tighten then tension (not the drag) it should be a little knob on the side somewhere.  Keep your thumb on the spool at all times, it gives you better control over the lure and it will prevent backlashes (birdnests). Once you learn how to cast it with a high tension turn it back a little at a time, so its not too loose that you get backlashes every cast, but not too tight that you can't cast it very far.

Above all, learn how to cast it well before you go fishing with it. If you don't you'll end up spending 5 minutes every other cast getting backlashes out.
