Super User Micro Posted February 26, 2008 Super User Posted February 26, 2008 This weekend I was told by a shop owner who spoke to a Stren rep (who has a cousin, who knows this guy...) who said that there are only two manufacturers of braided line in the US. He said the rep told him that it's pretty much all the same stuff and there is no real practical difference between brands. He said these two manufacturers make all the braid sold in the US labled as "made in USA" for the different brand names. True? Can anyone elaborate? Quote
TeamBerettaGold Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 I know that berkley and spiderwire are all made in house at berkley, ( I also know the berkley rep for WI, who has a cousin that may know your guy, lol) he said berkley renamed some of there mono and braid in order for it to sell better under a different name. MyKeyBe Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 Possibly true. I have read awhile ago in NAFC and maybe Bassin' that all braid was made by Spectra and (?), some other company. That was a while ago and I'm not sure it was true even at the time I read it. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted February 26, 2008 Super User Posted February 26, 2008 You really need to be more specific. "Braid" is an umbrella term that describes the weave not the material. There's Nylon braid, Dacron braid, Kevlar braid and Polyethylene braid. Roger Quote
Super User Micro Posted February 26, 2008 Author Super User Posted February 26, 2008 "Braid" is as specific as I can get. Dacron and Kevlar are DuPont trademarks. Polyethylene braid is Dyneema, I think. I'm not sure who has a lock on that trademark. All these compounds may be produced under license by various manufacturers??? I dunno. In short, I was just curious about whether there is all that much difference between braids. Quote
SimonSays Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 well...I know this isn't very scientific at all, but I've used to top 3 braids that many recommend (stren, PowerPro, and suffix) and they all work just the same for me...the only difference I notice is the amount of coloring the comes off on my fingers >< Quote
surfer Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 Same factory dose not mean same manufacturing process. There are clear differences between the varieties of braids I have tried. I don't know if it's the same factory or not though. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted February 26, 2008 Super User Posted February 26, 2008 Of the polyethlene braids, Spectra is a trademark of Honeywell International. I can't find out who is the mfg of MicroDyneena or Dyneenma using a web search. Those fibers have more or less taken the place of Kelvar in the manufacturing of ballistic fabrics. Quote

Super User Marty Posted February 27, 2008 Super User Posted February 27, 2008 I'll leave out Fireline, since that's a fused line, not a braid. I've used Power Pro and TUF Line XP and the latter did not cast well on my spinning equipment. So even though I've used just two braids, I can safely say they're not all the same. Quote
