I have been checking out the posts everyone has been making and the past posts about Revo's. I am looking into buying the Revo STX or the Revo SX. I have been reading a lot about the brake problems with the Revo SX. I am somewhat new to baitcasting and I wanted to see your opinions and further elaborations on the Revo's. I have a Shimano Citica and I do well with that reel. I was curious to see how much harder the Revo's are to control in comparison to a Citica.

I have 5 of the Revo STX's and have not had any of the brake problems that other folks seem to have.  I had been using Quantum baitcasters for a good number of years and just changed up.  The brake/drag system on the STX is great.  I can cast into the wind with it and all it takes is a bit more brake to keep from a nasty old backlash. It does fine with lighter baits too.

I would say that since you do well with the Shimano you would not have any problems with either the SX or STX.

Just need to keep that thumb focused on the job at hand.  ;)

I have 6 Revos, all with the magnetic brake, and don't have any problems.  I don't have any more backlashes than with other brands of reels.   The Revo's magnetic brake is a little less effective than, say, the Curado's centrifugal brake.  But I think that's a characteristic of magnetic brakes versus centrifugal brakes.

BTW, the STX doesn't substantially outperform the SX.  In practice, I can't really tell any difference.  The STX is a little more nicely appointed, though.

I went to BPS today to pick up two Revos to replace the Curados I sold.  BPS was sold out of the Revo S.   >;)

Same here, except I went to Gander Mountain. Since my daughter loves the S so much, I was going to set her up with another rod and reel, so she could throw plastics and spinners without having to go through line cutting and such. The only place around me that had one is Walmart, but those geniuses threw out the box, papers, oil, and wrench when they put it in the display case. I tried to get the manager to knock off a little, but to no avail. I ended up just getting one off eBay for $80 new.

Good information everyone! A couple questions though. I use the left hand retrieve and the only ratio in the Revo S, SX, and STX is 6.4:1. I never really paid attention to ratios but is 6.4:1 the general stand by? Would the high speed reel be used for flipping/pitching/cranking/spinnerbait/buzzbait? Are any of the Revo's setup specifically for something such as plastics, jigs, or spinnerbaits? I mean for an example (MADE UP) the SX is better designed for plastics then the STX which is for crankbaits. Another thing; I didn't really have the Revo S in mind, but could you guys go in depth more about the Revo S? Is it a good real, how does it compare to the other revos?

Thanks in advance!

The only substantial difference between the Revos is color, number of bearings, and some slick coatings. The Revo STX and Premier (I think) have completely disengaging spools, while the S, SX and SC do not.  The Premier is much lighter than the rest.  Of course, price, is a major difference.

The Revo S and Revo SC (a Cabelas exclusive) have 9 bearings.  The S has a cetrifugal brake, the SC has a megnetic brake.   The S only comes in 6.4:1 and the SC only comes in 7.1:1.

The SX is just like the SC but with 2 more bearings.  I have both and can't tell them apart with respect to performance.

Regarding 6.4:1 and 7.1:1 speed: either one is fine for plastics.  6.4:1 is probably the more versatile speed since it's slower it is more suitable for spinnerbaits and crankbaits.  But even 6.4:1 is a little fast, so you would need to slow down your retrieve.

I have the S and the SX. They are both great reels. The S is amazing for the money IMO.

I have 2 S-L's and 100% agree with that.

I bought an SX back a couple months ago and (so far) have been VERY impressed with the precision casting I have been getting out of it. Granted, I live in the frozen tundra of Illinois and haven't given it a rigorous run through yet, but I've been practicing my pitching with it and have never had the accuracy I have gotten with this reel. It is smooth as silk!

The SX and the STX are exactly the same reel with the same brake system. The STX has lighter spool and a different pinion.

After fishing both I can't either tell the difference.

I bought a few yesterday and I opened them and they seemed well lubricated, which is a change from my previous Revos which were a little dry.

Can you buy spare spools for the Revo? I just ordered an SX, was wondering if it's easy to swap spools on the fly like a spinning reel. This is my first baitcaster in about 15 years....
