I want to purchase another rod for 1/4-3/4 oz jigs and texas rigs. Is the BCR854 lighter in weight and/or better balanced than the MBR844C? Is one more comfortable to fish all day with? Is it difficult to cast a 1/4 oz texas rig with? For those who have owned both which one do you prefer as a dedicated jig & texas rig rod?

I have the MBR844 and MBR843.  I use the 843 with Flukes.  I use the 844 with worms/jigs.  Both rods are excellent and extremely lite.  I believe they are 4.5 ounces but you can do to G.Loomis sites and check out the weights.

I personally think the 843 might be a more all around rod because its a M/H versus Heavy but I like using liter tackle/rods.

I hope you get more replies because my next rod is going to be the BCR854, too. GMAN has both and has said that he prefers the BCR, but I don't recall exactly why. Maybe some of the other guys will be around later.

You've been interested in the BCR845 for some time now.  ;) I searched the forum for info on the BCRs and you mentioned that a few times. When do you plan on purchasing one? Let me know how it compares to the GLX MBR844C.  ;)

I still plan to buy the BCR854 and match it up with a Shimano Core, but when Reed's first put their St. Croix rods on sale I picked up a Legend Elite EC70MHF for $204! After buying a couple of reels from Redlinerobert, I did a little switch-aroo with my reels and bought another Avid (AC70MM) for $110. So, the new rigs ended up filling a few niches for an overall "better match":

EC70MHF/ Calais CL200

AC70MM/ Chronarch

AC66MF/ Metanium

I keep telling The Bait Monkey, "I don't really need another rig".

He says I'm wrong!

I have both rods you asked about in GLX. Both are great rods but I prefer the 844c. The BCR has a little stiffer tip and does not cast 1/4 oz jigs quite as well as the 844c, but I prefer the guides on the BCR after you get used to the sound they make while fighting a fish. I like to fish jigs and I normally will have a 1/4 oz rigged on the 844c and a 3/8 or 1/2 oz on the 854. To me these rods are nearly interchangable for Texas rigging or jig fishing, no sensitivity or weight difference that I can detect.

I debated about even responding to this thread because of objectivity. I love the MBR 844c for jigging and rigging. My favorite rod period. Had I purchased the BCR854 first maybe I would not be so biased. I really like them both but the MBR844c just feels better to me, with the BCR854 a very close second.............Tight lines............Al
