Super User .dsaavedra. Posted February 23, 2008 Super User Posted February 23, 2008 am i the only one who prefers flippin with a spinning rod? i can get much more accurate casts when i flip/pitch with my spinning rod. flipping w/ spinning gear just is more comfortable for me. maybe its the way you hold a spinning reel compared to a baitcast reel. im not sure. all i know is that im very good at flipping w/ spinning gear. so who else prefers spinning gear to flip/pitch? John J. Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 You're not the only one bud I can't pitch or flip on a bait-caster to save my life. When I try the lure only goes at max 5 feet lol! With a spin-cast I am accurate! Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted February 23, 2008 Super User Posted February 23, 2008 I am very good at flippin with a spinning rod too.Part of it requires you to always use your hand to close the bail, more control. I dont see any way possible that you can control your presentation while pitching though. You cannot feather your casts for quiet entry,or really have total control over where it lands.I also have trouble pitching under low hanging trees. With a baitcaster I can just wing it under them with an underhand cast.I also cannot get the distance when pitching with a spinning outfit. I dont prefer a spinning outfit, but I have gotten really good at using them.I dont own any baitcasting, but I use my friends every so often.Need the $$$ to get me some decent baitcasting equipment.I dont go cheap. Pond Hopper Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 Someone needs to teach you kids how to use a baitcaster... that is one area I would never pull out spinning tackle(unless I was wearing a dress). Quote
littlefisher Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 Someone needs to teach you kids how to use a baitcaster... that is one area I would never pull out spinning tackle(unless I was wearing a dress). I do have to agree with you here. I love flipping and pitching a bait caster. This is where the beauty of your thumb comes in. Being able to adjust on the fly by adding or releasing pressure is almost an art form sometimes. I practiced a lot last year and I can put it silently into almost any spot I want to know. Really comes in handy placing it between pads . Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted February 23, 2008 Super User Posted February 23, 2008 Totally agree with littlefisher and pondhopper.I am dying to get a hold of a real piece of equipment.I am just making due with what O got at the time. Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted February 23, 2008 Author Super User Posted February 23, 2008 haha maybe i should have made this clear: I CAN AND DO FLIP/PITCH WITH A BAITCASTER TOO i can flip/pitch with a baitcaster. i can get distance by doing that, i can get quiet entries, i can get accurate casts. i practiced this quite a bit last fall. i just prefer to flip/pitch while using spinning tackle. ohiobassmaster93 Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 gotta go with the baitcaster Quote
flippin Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 i use a spinning reel cause i skip alot of baits when im pichin and flippin Quote
Garnet Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 Got to do both and that means educating your pointing finger, yes you can feather that bait down, pin the line and ease it into the spot just takes practice. Now with Power Pro you can up your line size making a spinning rod just as deadly as a B/C. When you can switch back and foreth with ease your possiblitys open up. Garnet Quote

Garnet this is exactly what i do. i can use both and i do use both. its really a matter of what bait im using. i'll tend to flip mainly wacky worms with spinning and everything else with baitcasting. jrhennecke Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 There is no shame in pitchn' or flippin with spinning gear. My 2 best fish ever 10.2# and 10.13 both came pitchin Yum Dingers on spinning gear. I can also do the same with the bait casting gear, the spinning gear is just more comfortable. Like most of fishing you just need to do and use what you are comfortable with and remember not to confine yourself to conventional thinking. Quote
Red Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 i can pitch pretty good with my baitcasters....but i have no clue how to make my bait even go forward in a "flip"...i just dont get flipping Cliff Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 23, 2008 Super User Posted February 23, 2008 Dave, There are applications for both. For instance, the cover and structure you are throwing into will determine the set-up aloing with the water clarity. Heavy cover screams for a baitcaster. Light cover yells for a spinning rig. Clear water says to pitch as you can be farther away from your target. You hve to determine which set-up meets the conditions you are fishing. Now, with that said, you know that when you pitch or flip a spinning rig the bait falls straight down to the bottom where it enters the water. Right where you want to put it. Advantage spinning rig. With a baitcaster you know that the bait can swing back towards you after it enters the water for up to two feet. So you need to be closer to your target with a baitcaster than with a spinning rig. Advantage spinning rig in clear water. If you are in heavy cover and need to pull the fish out back to the boat, then a baitcaster may be your weapon of choice. Advantage baitcaster. If you have trouble with backlashes on a baitcaster, then the spinning rig is the best bet. Advantage spinning rig. Flipping is usually done with a baitcaster due to its unusual technique. No backlashes and it is easy to use. Advantage baitcaster. Pitching goes either way, as we discussed and no backlasahes when using a spinning set-up. So give both a whack and see which technique you lik best. Also, do you have Denny Brauer's Jig Secrets to Huge Catches video? It is a must if you want to pitch and flip. If you can't find the video check your local bookstore for the paper back copy. It is excellent, too. Denny taught me how to flip and pitch at one of the Bassmaster University lectures. Yes, the master was there and he introduced the technique and showed us how to use it. Now, I do mostly pitching with a jig, wacky worm or a shaky head set-up. I even have been known to throw an unweighted Senko and some Zoom four-inch mocassin blue Dead Ringers with a 1/8 pegged bullet weight. Dynamite in some Virginia rivers when fishing shallow or in structure. I will try the drop shot technique by pitchng and flipping as soon as it gets warm. Where is golbal warming when you need it???? Well if you can do both, more power to you. I used to be really really good with a spinning rod doing almost anything I wanted. But the last two years I've been strictly using a bc to get good at it, and I've lost some of my touch with a spinning rod. I hope to get that back this summer. Quote
fishizzle Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 Wow thats one heated debate littlefisher I only use a baitcaster for pitchin Spinning for me is for senkos and drop shot I dont't know how you can have a soft entry with spinning (more power to ya) Quote

bass wrangler569 Posted February 24, 2008 Posted February 24, 2008 Someone needs to teach you kids how to use a baitcaster... that is one area I would never pull out spinning tackle(unless I was wearing a dress). I agreed. If you are flipping and pitching more accurately with a spinning rod than with a baitcaster, your baitcasting skills need a little work. You still can get pretty accurate with a spinning rod, just not as accurate as a baitcaster. Quote

Garnet Posted February 25, 2008 Posted February 25, 2008 Being accurate is very important B/C has small advantage on your entry no advantage on accurcey. B/c has a hugh disadvantage with light baits. Spinning has hugh disadvantage heavier than 1\2. You can skip well with B\c. Spinning has a hugh advantage skipping. Spinning can use a wider range of lb. test. So if you are weak with either B/C or Spinning today is when you need to start working. Garnet Quote
Super User Catt Posted February 25, 2008 Super User Posted February 25, 2008 I think y'all need to learn the difference between Flipping & Pitching When flipping there is a fixed amount of line from the end of the rod to the bait, no disengaging of the reel is required once this fixed amount of line has been determined. Therefore it makes absolutely no difference which reel is used, shoot you can flip with a cane pole. When pitching you are actually opening the bail or pushing the button to disengage the spool to actually allow amount of line to change. This is as common of a misunderstanding as calling cover and structure the same Quote
