Without question you spend $100 on the rod and wait on the baits.  I'd rather spend my $100 on a rod even if it meant I had to dig up my own worms to use the rest of the year!  No kidding!  Get yourself a Shimano Compre' or Daiwa Light and Tough if you can find one for $100.  I think the '07 Avids are pretty much gone.  I'm sure someone will recommend the Crucial or '08 Avid, but at $159 that puts him way over budget.  If that happens I'll recommend the IMX  .  $99 or $119 is more like it...Falcon Lowrider would be another option.

well i am looking to buy something that academy carries, so i dont have to order online...i was thinking about an all star something or other, i cant remember the specific name of the rod, but it was $99.99 at academy, and they had several different powers and actions to choose from.

The Team All Star IM10 would be a fine choice if that's what you're looking at. I'd go with the rod. Maybe get 5 of the killer specials from ***? Won't cost you much.

A Team All Star IM10 would be a great choice. All Star's American Classic series is fantastic as well. I have some of both and like them both very much. Make sure you thoroughly inspect the rod, including the guides, before you leave the store. I've been noticing some sloppy work on the guides (ie. incompletely wrapped guide foot, big bubble in glue, guide eye completely glued over).

Have you considered a Fenwick rod?  I've collected a few HMGs and HMXs and they are fine rods and they won't break the bank.

If I had a need for the rod, I would buy the rod.  Otherwise I would stock up on the stuff I use all the time; hooks, softplastic, bullet weights, fluorcarbon line, a hard bait or two or maybe a reel good pair of fishing pliers.

Since I have 7 new rod and reel setups, I'd opt to spend ALL the money on soft baits/lures and Owner hook:o) In fact, as soon as I get home from the commissary, I'm off to Lakeside to get some Fat Ikas and EWG 4/0 offset worm hooks! That should at least amount to $100 WITH all the other stuff the monkey will MAKE me buy when I walk into the place!!!  "Beware the Curse"

Got the same problem myself, Red. I have a $100 BPS gift card I've been sitting on since mid December. And, I have almost $100 worth of rewards points sitting there.

The bait monkey is starting to talk to me.

Why don't you go shopping, and get him off my back?

I'm back from Angler's Edge in Lakeside. Better equipped, but $105 poorer. I knew I couldn't walk into that place and only spend $50!! Bit in the arse by Mr. BM again:o)

that there is something i dont have to worry about...no boat.....i have been thinking about it now and i think i am going to go a diferent route....my buddy has a rod that i can have to put my reel on now, then i can spend my $100 on a new rod and reel, maybe a black max and a allstar classic rod....just cant decide

I have been looking at this rod for atleast 3-4 weeks but havent bought it yet. I want the 6'10 M/F spinning rod but im still thinking about saving an extra 40 and buying the Fenwick HMG. Does Cabelas carry these in the store? I would like to compare them both at the same time but i remember hearing someone say they dont carry them in stores only online. I would buy 100 worth of tackle Cliff, unless i needed the rod badly, then i would buy the rod.

Red, you mentioned the Black Max. I bought one a couple of days ago. I have a Silver Max combo that was given to me at Christmas, that I really like. I wanted to compare the two reels. I like both of them equally well. So what if they have graphite frames, I don't plan on Sturgeon fishing with them. They seem to be really good reels for not alot of money. I know that Gander Mountain and Dick's have Silver Max combos for around $70. They have a Silver Max with a 6'6" MH Berkley Lightning Rod or a Silver Max with a 6'6" MH Silver Max rod(which is a renamed Abu Garcia One rod). The Silver Max rod is what I have. I like it alot. I do not have any All Star rods, but have used a couple of the new Instinct rods of my friends. They seem to be excellent rods for the money. Anyway, for a $100, you should be able to get a good combo and possible some baits too.
