NCthompson Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 I just got a new bait caster and realized the reel is made so i use my right hand to real in but all of my spinning reels i did it with my left hand. Is there a way to switch it around because it didnt look like it was interchangable and i thought itd be much easier casting and stopping the line and reeling the other way. Quote
Jake. Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 On some spinning reels the handle is interchangable, but I have never seen a baitcaster that is... Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 14, 2008 Super User Posted February 14, 2008 Nope. Baitcasters traditionally come with right-hand retrieve, but today most reels are offered right or left. However, baitcasters cannot be modified. Quote
NCthompson Posted February 14, 2008 Author Posted February 14, 2008 ok. well roadwarrior im right handed, but i like to cast with my right arm, and when i do with my right arm i have to shift my hands everywhere. i didnt know if that was normal Quote

Otherwise, you'll need to get a different reel. Quote

I once, too fished with a left-handed baitcaster (that you casted right-handed and reeled with your left). I did this untill finding a great deal on a right-hander and after some time now fish well with either hand. Give it some time and you'll be able fish right-handed well. Quote

Yep dont worry about it thats how I do it too. But only cause I dont like the feel of a left handed baitcaster for some reason? You might want to just go to a tackle shop and see what your preference is. Quote
NCthompson Posted February 14, 2008 Author Posted February 14, 2008 haha i know im right handed. i cant cast at all left handed and thats why i was asking. Quote

It will never ever feel "right" to you without a lot of reprogramming. Take from someone who did the same thing buying his first bc reel with a rh handle. As already mentioned, the handle is not interchangeable. Quote

NCthompson Posted February 14, 2008 Author Posted February 14, 2008 i cast the same way as the other pole i just reel in different. im not going to take it back or anything. I just move my hand from the spool of line to the reel after i cast Quote
d.hark Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 I think one reason alot of us that cast it right handed then switch to reel it right is cause we are right handed. Why not do both with your dominate side? For some reason reeling a baitcaster just never felt comfortable reeling lefty for me. I switch hands just before the lure hits the water and it doesnt hamper me one bit, even with buzzbaits I can get them going as soon as it hits the water. Just do what you are most comfortable with. But if you havent picked up a lefty yet you should at least feel what its like before you make a choice. They just dont feel right to me and never did??? Quote
Mike-in-WV Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 There was a really good discussion about this same question not long ago and here are some great answers and tips from some people on here who are a whole lot smarter them me on this subject :-[ Mike http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1202507107 Quote
Mike-in-WV Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 Makes me wonder if the guy who invented Bait casting reels was left handed ;D Mike Quote
