fish-fighting-illini Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 My local tackle store still has some of the Avid's for $50 off. So around $90 - 100 depending on the model. I couldn't quite justify the $100 expense right now so I bought a Zebco 12' crappie rod! I'll sleep on the Avid though so maybe still? Quote
sal669 Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 What model Avids?( Lenght/Power/action). Any MH pover? Quote
fish-fighting-illini Posted February 8, 2008 Author Posted February 8, 2008 What model Avids?( Lenght/Power/action). Any MH pover? The 2 casting were 6' and 6'3 both medium I think one fast one extra fast? The spinning's I didn't look as close at. By the time you add tax and ship no help to you as you are in MI and I am dead center of IL Quote
Guest avid Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 the avid is a great rod. The "older" model is a steal at the prices you mention. be advised, no wal mart rod will ever feel the same again. Quote
Crankhead Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 I agree with Avid. Not only is that a good price but that is a great rod. Quote

Good advice guys but yes I know it is a good buy as I bought one for $90 or 99 from Reeds a while back and that was shipped to my door! Haven't had a chance to fish it much yet. I still might go back and get one just trying to let the bait monkey calm down first. PS I thought the Avid / Zebco would raise some eyebrows like what the heck? LOL Quote
Super User FishTank Posted February 8, 2008 Super User Posted February 8, 2008 Let me get this straight, you bought a 12' Crappie Rod. That is one long rod. I don't care if it's made my Zebco. What's up with a 12' rod? Are you going to spear them? ;D Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 8, 2008 Super User Posted February 8, 2008 If you are staking tomatoes in your garden, I would definitely go with the Zebco! : Quote

What's up with a 12' rod? Are you going to spear them? ;D LOL it allows you to jig or minnow fish while not being so close to scare off the fish. It also allows you to reach into brush piles and drop it in w/o having to cast. I don't know that much about crappie fishing but I thought the rod might be worth a try. I almost did the 10' but it was 3 pcs. For $16 what the heck I can sell it for $10 They even had 15' and 16'3 ' in another brand. I thought that might be a little much ( longer than my boat ). Good comeback RW Quote
fish-fighting-illini Posted February 8, 2008 Author Posted February 8, 2008 a zebco over an avid? What the heck? ;D ;D Quote
jwo1124 Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 I thought longer rods were the norm for Crappie fishing, especially when jigging. I heard they are weary and tend to spook easily, hence a longer rod let's you jig from a distance. I also saw Jimmy Houston catching a ton on light gear and a Road Runner...never done much crappie fishing. There are some in the local ponds I fish. I've only caught two though, mostly when fishing smaller lures. Quote
fish-fighting-illini Posted February 9, 2008 Author Posted February 9, 2008 Hey JWO I use roadrunners ( the underspin maribou type ) a lot. Don't underestimate them as I have caught several 4lb bass on them. I use them for bass only whan it is time to downsize during the heat season. During crappie season it is nice because while fishing for crappie bass tend to hit them as well. Twice the fun! To avoid the stir crazy winter I went out yesterday. I tried out the 12' er. I was fishing from a levie deal in a park along the river. The 12' came in handy as it let me get out from the railing a ways. I've got to admit casting was a bit of an adventure! No fish but I got out. Quote
