How many times a year would you recommend changing line on your reels if you fish once or twice a week?

What type of line?  Mono, copoly, flouro, braid?

If its mono, flouro, copoly once a month should be enough.  If its braid, leave it on until there isn't enough to make a cast on the spool.

If you fished 4 or more days like I do, you should change every week.

Flouro will last a lot longer than mono.

If I'm fishing mono, I'll change before every tournament.  With flouro (when I do fish it), I'll fill the reel in the spring and fish all summer on it.

I just fish recreationally and don't respool until the line is down enough to affect casting. This is for both mono and braid. Haven't had any problems.

flouro will last a season.braid will last years.cajun red cast will last 3/4 of a season.this is if you use a product like kvd line and lure spray on the line.

I am using mono right now.  Once I finish off this spool I am going to give the Yozuri Hybrid Ultra soft a shot on my spinning reel.  I have never used flouro before, whats a good brand?

I get 2 years out of braid. Spooled up first year, strip it off, swap it end for end, and use it the second year. I don't spool fluorcarbon, but it should work out the same. Mono is a cut the damage off and keep using until there is not much left. Strip off the remaining and respool fresh. That's the way I do it. Maybe RW will tell you what he does for Yo-Zuri, for when you switch to that, as he is the resident expert on that brand.

if you fish mono on a spinning reel then the answer to the question of how often to change it out is one simple word:  continuously!  ;-)

Seriously, I change out about 50 yards or more about every 3rd outing.

On baitcasters, about every 4th outing.

Braid is actually the cheapest line you can buy over the whole season (or 2 seasons) - it really just kinda lasts forever.

Mono - If i'm fishing heavily, i'll change every 2-4 outings.  But if i'm fishing a couple times a month, i'll do it once a month.

casual fisherman for mono i would say 3-4 times per season, braid i would reverse it after 2 years and replace once it gets too short or after 4 years.

See, I am one that changes my fluoro as often as mono.  Fluoro is impervious to UV rays, but not to nicks in the line and abrasion from structure.  I generally change my line every few outings (say every 4 trips)...I base it on the way my line feels by running my fingers down it.  I buy bulk spools of fluoro and mono,  and most of my reels don't hold very much line, so it isn't costing me that much to enjoy that feeling of fresh line.  Am I the only one that loves that feeling of fresh line?  Good stuff!

For the most part, Yo-Zuri Hybrid and Hybrid Ultra Soft do not wear our or get old. I like to have 80 -100 yards of line available BEFORE feeling a knot. When I "change line" it's usually just "adding" the line I like to have available. Backing lasts forever.

I change mono EVERY day it gets fished. I keep backing on several reels so I may not change the entire spool. If it gets fished, it get respooled that night.

Braid stays on until it looses its color or I get leery about it. Some have been on several reels since December, and I am considering changing before next trip

I will add this. I keep my spools completely full as it changes the gear ratio on the reel when the line gets way below the top of the spool at the end of a long cast and  I like the extra gear ratio.

I am using the "backing" aproach, too. I don't strip off  the whole line, only to my backing, wich is usualy a heavier test line.I am cutting off the "used" line as often as necessary and deffinitely at the end of the day, and when I'm "low", I respool.

Thanks for the help.  I guess its time to change out the line since I actually went 6 times in january.
