BuzzMan Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 I'm going to try braid line for the first time, I bought Power Pro 30 lb. I'm going to try it on one of my Jig rods only just to see if I like it or not. I will use this set up for mainly fish wood cover!! I have a few quetions for those that use it or tried it. I have Lo-Vis Green, Will it be hard for me to see my line on the water? Watching for strikes!! Do I need a Flo-Carbon leader?? If so,what pound test line?? Reel Backing,,,,I will tie this to 17lb XT,,,Will this be okay?? Anything else I should know?? Quote
JayB Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 I have Lo-Vis Green, Will it be hard for me to see my line on the water? Watching for strikes!! If you can see regular green fishing line, then you will be able to see this too. Do I need a Flo-Carbon leader?? If so,what pound test line?? A leader isnt required, only if it gives you more confidence then use one. If your going to use a leader, I reccomend the same diameter leader as the braid is. Reel Backing,,,,I will tie this to 17lb XT,,,Will this be okay?? You should be OK on that. Quote
Masshole Mike Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 Do I need a Flo-Carbon leader?? If so,what pound test line?? you don't need it, but if you're fishing clear water you might want one. because it's a leader you can pretty much use whatever test you want. Quote
lubina Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 I was a long term user of PP until someone in this board introduced me to Sufix....the PP was done. I always use a leader, fluoro or copol, no that much for visibility but for rod/reel protection. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted January 30, 2008 Super User Posted January 30, 2008 I have been using Power Pro for several years. I only use the Hi Vis yellow because I want to see it. I use a leader for jigs and tubes but not for deep vertical jigging or spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. Quote
Super User Alpster Posted January 30, 2008 Super User Posted January 30, 2008 You didn't say if you are using it on a baitcaster or spinning reel. If you use it on a baitcaster, I would step it up to 50lb PP. The larger diameter will behave better and will come closer to matching the diameter of your backing and leader. 50lb PP and 12lb mono are very close in diameter, joining knots will hold better if diameters are the near the same. Super User RoLo Posted January 30, 2008 Super User Posted January 30, 2008 I'm using 'moss green' PowerPro and because polyethylene tends to float, it's rather easy to line-watch. As for fluorocarbon leader, I think that's more of a confidence thingy. I've tried it both ways (with & w/o a leader) but now I simply tie the braid direct to everything. Should the day come that I feel it's hurting my action, I'll promptly switch back to using a leader. Roger Quote
Hooked_On_Bass Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 I always use a leader, fluoro or copol, no that much for visibility but for rod/reel protection. lubina, I am assuming you're referring to protecting your rod/reel when getting hung up (easier to break the line)? Correct? :-/ Quote
BuzzMan Posted January 30, 2008 Author Posted January 30, 2008 Thanks everyone!! What is this about hurting your rod & reel?? It will be on a baitcaster. Leader question?? If I did use a Flo-Carbon leader,,,,Is Flo-Carbon strong then regular mono?? EXP; Is 12lb FloCar as strong as 20lb mono? Quote
garhide Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 nop 12 is 12 and20 is 20 but for a better idea line of equal diameter will mostly be the same pound test mike Quote
huskertko Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 kinda off topic a little but how long of a leader does everyone use? Do i need a 3 foot leader of will a 1 or 2 foot one work? Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted February 1, 2008 Super User Posted February 1, 2008 huskertko, I start with around 4' and replace it after retying a few times when it gets to about 2'. I use the fluorocarbon leader only to make the braid sink for weightless plastics presentations. I use 14# fluorocarbon leader with 20# braid and 20# fluorocarbon leader with 30# braid. Quote
Trevor in Burke Posted February 4, 2008 Posted February 4, 2008 why a leader? the only reasonable explanation i've seen is for weightless plastics, and even with that I personally have never experienced a problem and I always use 20lb powerpro on all my reels with every lure. I have NEVER thought I was having trouble with visibility, I honestly think it's overrated, but really... there is no way of knowing, we're not fish... Also the backing I've never put much thought in to, I just use what I have it doesnt matter and only like 10 yds at that, it's just there so the braid doesnt slip and it's not gonna come undone that far down the spool, if you're casting and seeing your backing on the spool you need to reline your reel. Just my opinion... Quote
Super User senile1 Posted February 4, 2008 Super User Posted February 4, 2008 I think Dodgeguy was testing the visibility factor this year and he noticed he was getting more bites fishing fluoro in situations where he had only fished braid before. (Dodgeguy, correct me if I'm incorrect.) When fishing thick vegetation I see no reason to have a fluoro leader as visibility is poor anyway and a green braid will blend in, but if you are fishing wood, I think it might be a good idea. I made some comparisons between fluorocarbon and braid this year, and I think the leader made a difference in my number of strikes. I really think that in some situations the fish can see the braid. IMO. BTW, Power Pro is a good choice. Sufix is my personal preference. Quote
huskertko Posted February 4, 2008 Posted February 4, 2008 I have been using Suffix braid, but i am thinking about trying the new Stren Microfuse, supposedly much more like mono in terms of visibility underwater. Quote
