The main reason for all the Quantum junkies back in the day  :) was because of good ol Bill Dance.

(the old guys know about the 1310mg). The 1310 was the 5000 Abu of the Quantum line.  Indestructible, bulletproof, and reliable.  That silver reel was with me in my first tournaments in '90.  A couple of years later I saved up for the Pro3c', which were the top of the line.  What is amazing, is that in '92; the Tour Edition rod which I used was built on the same blank as the PT Tour Edition rods are today...says right on the shaft 'blank by Lamiglas' HSX54.  Same graphite they have used for two decdades.
I'm one of the old guys that remembers that piece of plastic junk. We would get those things in the shop, take them apart clean re-lube them, and when we went to re-assemble them, they would be so out of tolerance they wouldn't go back together right. They would bind up and be no good, yea I remember having to ship a butt load of them back to Quantum for replacement. The Pro2 and 3C's were another of the Quantum disappointments we ran across.

I still have 6 of the QG3501 Competitions that were the precursor to the Energy series reels now that's when Quantum first started to try and get their stuff together.

Yup even fished with that Tour Edition Rod, that was a heavy weight rod for sure, it weighed a ton, and is part of the reason I started builing my own.

Just my .02¢

I make a lot of my reel choices by looking at the shelves in the Bass Pro Catalog outlet store.  I am in there about 1 time each week.  I walk by the "reconditioned" reels and see what is there.  There are generally a few Daiwas, hundreds of Quantums and hundreds of the different house brands.  In all the years I have been going there I have only seen 1 Shimano.

Well i have experience with Pflueger, Quantum,Daiwa, and little shimano and I honestly have to say the daiwa is about 12years old its a 2ball bearing and we still fish with it. Some of these guys who say about poor quality probally abuse their reels and dont take care of them. IF you make an investment and take care of any of these reels they will last for years.

Admittedly, and 15/16yrs old I didn't have the luxury of trying out several reels.  Around the time I owned my Pro series Quantums (which I thought were just stellar), I fished with a guy in my club that bought a new Daiwa TD-Hi.  He let me try it, and I couldn't believe how far I could cast and how smooth it was.  I realized that up until that point, the 1310mg and the Abu XLTplus Synchro were the only reels I had used.  My mindset was Quantum was what I owned, so Quantum was the best :).  The TD-hi put me in my place.   It wasn't far from then that the original Calcutta was introduced and everybody went nuts about its performance, but I couldn't afford (and couldn't believe) the $150 it was fetching.  What would you consider reels of around 1990 that were great for the money and had tight tolerances?  Today I would say the Pro series Quantums were definitely pieces of crap, but the Tour Edition rods were good for back in the day.  I remember when the Falcon Original came out, and I thought it was a brick and not as sensitive.  A lot of guys I fished with used the BPS rods...definitely wasn't impressed by them.  The Original All Star IM6 was comparable I thought...I purchased one later on.  The Loomis IM6 was around, but it was so far out of my budget I didn't even pick it up.

All of my reels are Quantum, the tour edtiuon burner is great, also the energy pts have not had a problem with them except for the older model of the energy pt, the finishing started to wear off but the reel is great. They changed that style. Can't wait to get the new tour edition spinning reel.

I would highly recommend quantum reels. I personally fish only quantum reels. Energy spinning reels, Tour edition baitcasters. They are hands down awesome reels. I too also still have my 1310mg.  I think I got it when I was 8 or 9 years old, or something like that.  I still use it today. That reel is still awesome! Although I did have to replace a gear this year, but thats not to bad considering I have had it for almost 15 years.  Seriously though quantum makes a good fishing reel.

I have been fishing Quantums for a while, they are good, reliable reels, they only negative aspect I see, they are heavier than most in other brands.

When I was younger (mid '90s) my three reels were a Shimano Symetre spinning reel, Daiwa Pro something or other baitcaster (black kinda boxy - great reel), and a Quantum Energy spinning reel.  The Quantum and Symetre were very comparable reels, and I actually preferred the Quantum slightly (I liked the sound of the drag more  ;D).  Both reels tolerated incredible abuse over several years until the shipping company lost them on our move north.  Point is, although Quantum reels aren't as popular as Shimanos, for example, they're still quality reels that should last a long time.

Nowadays the only reason I won't buy Quantum reels just because they look like crap, IMO.

Just my 2cents, but I know a few guys that fish Quantum reels that haven't had any problems with them. They love 'em. I have a buddy that went out and bought an Energy PT and kinda had a hard time with it because the cast control was tough to dial in. He hadn't been fishing a BC for all that long. I have a couple Citica's, and he tried one out while we were fishing one time. He wouldn't give it back becuase he could cast it so well. He really enjoyed using it because he could spend more time fishing, and less time learning to use the BC. Here's where my 2cents come in. Given that you kinda just started using a BC, I really think that Shimano did a great job between the spool weight and the cast control to make it an easy reel to use. I think you'd really enjoy using it. Oh, and the quality and feel of the reel is right on in that price range too. +1 on the Citica. Sorry I didn't have anything useful to add on the reel you asked about though. :)

First of all a bunch of new people to the forum on this topic. Welcome to all of you salad, Pal, Dog Kemist, 2000 ... and the ones I missed.

Salad I think your post was perfect. He asked about Quantum reels in general. You posted from first hand experience what you've seen and a great comparison on what another particular reel solced for the same person.

The reason I bring it up was although I liked my Quantum Mantra it backlashes easier. It was my first reel when I got back into fishing. It was also my first ever BC so it is kind of a sentimentle(sp) thing. When I bought my Shimano Citica I almost instantly eliminated most problems that I had with backlashes.
