Mono, Braid, Floruo, Copoly, so many lines...TOO MANY choices!!!

Hey all..

You're looking at a guy who grew up and used monofilament forever! I am now crawling into the 2000's just finding braid (PowerPro to be exact) and reading up on flouro, co-polys, etc. I sat down today and put together a list from a book I'm reading of "suggested", rods, reels, and lines for SPECIFIC applications (plastics, cranks,topwater, jigs, etc.) and the combinations are ASTRONOMICAL!!!! The new B.A.S.S magazine came today and Skeet Reese seems to say, forget about mono, flouro is the Pros wave of the future!!

I played golf for 30 years and saw this same type of thing go on there with equipment. If you didn't have the newest, bestest stuff, you are behind the 8 ball. (I never felt that way!)

How much of this is just hype to sell new equipment and line and how much is semi true?

Is there and all around line for different applications? And if you feel there is, let me hear what you think it is.

He is also getting paid to say that.  When Skeet wants to start buying my line, then I'll switch to flouro.  Until then,  :-X

Your analogy with the golf equipment market is a good one.  Truth be known all the different types of line have their place.  I use P-line CX premium almost exclusively.  I suppose if I had an unlimited budget and my livlihood depended on it I'd do the flouro or braid thing.

            I fished mono until last year.  I tried fluorocarbon and really like it.  I am going to add braid this year.  This is my plan for line for the year.

Baitcasters

Mono - crankbaits

Fluorocarbon - jigs, t-rigs, spinnerbaits

Braid - frogs and swimbaits

Spinning

All Mono

But I will try fluorocarbon on one this year and see what I think.

I use suffix braid with a floro leader on spinning gear for everything. The braid cast farther and has les line twist or memory problems. It is also much more sensitive. The floro leader is to reduce visibility.

In techniques that a stretchier line would be better I use a softer rod.  Suffix handles better than power pro for me.  I am addicted to the castability and sensitivity of braid and can't use anything else.

I do have problems with the floro leader sinking when I use stationary top water bait or if there is any above a bobber when I am using live bait. It creates a bow in the line and complicates the hook set.

Despite having the latest and greatest equipment I am still not a good fisherman and I have never hit a hole in one.

There is no hype at all to these lines.  Fluorocarbons are indeed nearly invisible underwater and have a much greater sensitivity over mono.  Braid is even more sensitive but you cannot find a clear one yet except for Fireline Crystal and the new Spiderwire which I have bad expreinces w/.  I would say that if your on a budget get braid and use a 10ft. fluoro leader.  This way you get a long lasting line and have a nearly invisible part to where it counts.  I have some PowerPro on a few reels that I have yet to replace in the 5 years I've been using it.

I use flouro on everything but top water (copoly) and Flipping/Pitching in Heavy cover I use Power Pro Braid.

I'm going over to almost all fluoro this year. But I will keep one or two rods with braid for heavy cover.

To me it comes down to the bait, and water clarity. If I'm at RWP fishing that green water with a jig, then it's braid. If I'm up Northern R.I. I use mostly fluoro since you can see the bottom in 18'. I always use Mono for top water and cranks for some stretch....
