RobDar Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 everyone see the new Shimano reels with little circut boards in them??? ...digital reels??? Have we gone a little overboard here? Quote
Korea_Bassin Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 I'm guessing you are talking about the Calcutta TE DC. Those have been out for 2-3 years now. I have a regular Calcutta TE and although I have never tried one with the chip, I've heard that they aren't worth the huge price difference. Quote
Super User .RM. Posted January 27, 2008 Super User Posted January 27, 2008 Not really they have been out for some time now..... The Calcutta TE DC and the Calais DC... For the angler with more money than a good casting technique.... Tight Lines!!!! Quote
skillet Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 Granted, I'm an old stick-in-the-mud and probably tech. challenged too but that's not only gone overboard you've gone down the second time ... As Ever, skillet Quote
lubina Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 Well, they are here to stay....hopefully cheaper in the near future. Quote
Super User Raul Posted January 27, 2008 Super User Posted January 27, 2008 Not really they have been out for some time now.....The Calcutta TE DC and the Calais DC... For the angler with more money than a good casting technique.... Tight Lines!!!! And still, I haven 't found a single baitcaster I can 't backlash thoroughly. ;D Quote
Super User Alpster Posted January 27, 2008 Super User Posted January 27, 2008 Don't knock them till you try them. I have a TE200DC and it is amazing. Will cast a feather into the wind. JMHE Ronnie Quote
KYbass1276 Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 Have been told they work good but there just not for me. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted January 27, 2008 Super User Posted January 27, 2008 Don't knock them till you try them. I have a TE200DC and it is amazing. Will cast a feather into the wind. JMHERonnie X2.. IMHO, if Clacutta were a tad lighter then they would be the BEST reel out there. PERIOD. I actually bought my DC by accident, but I have several regular Calcuttas and they are workhorses of any fresh water reel I've ever used. Quote
Guest Wiimote_Angler Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 http://www.plat.co.jp/shop/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=22_81_85_869&products_id=4908 I'm wondering if I should save up and wait till this comes over here. This baby is only $512 and 6.9oz. I just need to know more about the warranty also. I was going to get the Steez and then I started learning about DC and eventually this sweet thing. Quote
Oscar O. Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 That reel (from the link above) looks sweet! I did the conversion, and it will cost about 512 USD. Isn't that less than the Calais DC? If so that would be nice. I'm thinking about saving up for one, might take a while! Too bad that only the right hand model can reserved... I did notice that there is on less ball bearing in the reel, but that doesn't make too much of difference does it? Sure would be fun to play with! ;D Quote
Oscar O. Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 Yes, but is it better than the Calais DC? I don't want to save up for something that has a superior to it that costs less! If it does turn out to be, i might be getting that sooner than i had originally thought! Quote

JMHERonnie Ronnie,Not knocking them... I had two of the 200TEDC's come in and I told the guy he would have to send them straight to Shimano. When Shimano first released the DC's, I contacted them to find out how we were supposed to handle the training on them. I could have gone back to the coast for it or just have the owners send them out there. I chose the later.. Will cast a feather into the wind.I think you mean allow the proper rod to cast the feather into the wind.... Tight Lines!!! Quote
JayW Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 Although I don't have the digital version... I do love Calcutta's. I use the 100's and I have one 50. Awesome reels! I think some of you guys need to man up and quit whining about a couple of ounces or so! ;D Seriously, some people want to use a feather for a reel. I think weight has a little to do with strength. You're looking at a solid metal reel vs plastic/graphite, ETC... I guess I'm just old fashioned (grew up using the old round Abu's) so don't attack me too hard, guys. :'( Look at this beauty! Quote
Super User Alpster Posted January 28, 2008 Super User Posted January 28, 2008 I think the quality of these reels gets lost in the hype and debate about computer chips and overpriced technology. The fact of the matter is, I have fished with some of the nicest reels out there and when you hold a TE DC in your hands, you can throw away the computer control and you still have one of the most amazing reels you have ever seen. The fit, finish, balance, materials, smoothness of the mechanics, attention to detail and finally, casting it is like driving a Ferrari. The computer controlled braking (which works amazingly) is only a part of a complete package of performance that is hard to match. JMHO Ronnie Quote
NBR Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 Does anyone else think we have gone whacko over our tackle? I mean silicon chip reels, rods for cranks, rods for surface, rods for frogs and on and on! Don't get me wrong I usually have 5 rods on the deck as many in the rod box and more at home so the monkey has bitten me more than a few times but goodness! Some of those just getting into fishing must think it takes a ton of stuff to catch fish or compete in local T's. Quote
