Using spray silicone for fishing line

I read that if you spay silicone on your fishing line that it will protect it.  If so what should I look for to buy and what is a good brand.

Silicone sprays only coat the line and will wash off in a couple of cast.  I have had good luck with the KVD Line & Lure.  Line & Lure is a polymer blend that becomes part of the line to elimiante memory and aid casting distance. I have never used line softener/conditioner. I wonder how  dish soap or fabric softener mixed with water would do. Sometimes these fancy formulas can be easily duplicated.

CRC Silicone spray is pretty much the same thing as Real Magic and is much much cheaper.

I ran them side by side last year, couldn't tell a difference.

I was one of the pioneers that recommended the CRC silcone spray.  I always hose my filler and bulk spools of line before I put them on the shelf, and noticed the CRC was eating into the plastic on my filler spools...eating in to it as in once the line was off...there were groove marks where the line was and spots where the line had fused to the plastic.  What baffled me, was that the CRC was FDA approved for incidental food contact.   The CRC uses Acetone in the propellant, which totally evaporates and leaves no residue when dry, but when wet can dissolve plastic.  I meant to make a post about it, because I felt I was one of the people that pushed it.  If you want a cheaper alternative to reel magic, and a much higher grade of silicone...go with Clearco...the 'Gloomis' of silicone products.  Their 'High Performance Silicone Spray' is super fast drying and contains no solvents in the propellant <---- this is important!  It like $48 for a case (twelve 16oz cans).  Reel Magic is a 4oz can for almost $6.

I did (I think I mentioned)...but I can't spill the beans and ruin any product possiblilities!  All I'm saying is the KVD spray is waaay overpriced.  I mean crazy overpriced.  I will say that their 'polymer bonding' or whatever claim is just marketing.  The difference between reel magic and KVD is the fact Reel Magic is pretty much silicone oil and a propellant, and the KVD is a water based silicone with a LOT of filler...aka distilled water.   The KVD type of spray workes better because line can absorb water molecules (which are smaller than oil molecules), and therefore alter the properties of the line (much like armor-all minus the oily ingredients that leave a film or greasy feel).  The base product of the KVD spray cosists of 2 products that when mixed with distilled water create the spray (regular water will leave residue due to the minerals).  The KVD spray is so watered down I couldn't believe it...they are making such a profit it is sick!  Why don't you PM me your addy and I will send you a sample to see what you think.  I need someone to try it out.

I have to agree that both Reel Magic and KVD spray are way over priced for what they do but I do like the KVD spray.  I was given a sample of it last year and it worked great the few times I was able to use it.  

Also, I was just given a few large bottles of it last week from a local tackle shop so I will be using it all season.  I plan on testing this stuff to see if it is hype, BS or something worth using.  I'll be using on Trilene XL, Trilene Fluorocarbon, Gama copoly, P-Line Floroclear and Power Pro.  I figure at the price I got it for (free), why not.

I have been using the KVD for about 18 months.  Before that I had used Reel Magic.  Reel Magic provided a small benefit for a short time.  I spray my Mono & Fluoro lines with the KVD before loading the rods in the boat.  I fish heavy cover and use 14, 15 and 20# test lines.  The KVD WORKS in taking out the memory.  A bottle will last me 3-4 months so I don't feel it is too high of a price to pay for fishing heavy weight lines that don't coil like a spring.

I have no skin in this game other than offering my opinion.  Good luck on coming up with a homemade version.   If the benefit of the KVD was simply line absorbing water molecules, they would evaporate pretty fast after sitting on the deck.  Or simply fishing the line would take out the memory just as well.  I am basing my opinion on actual use over an extended period, not simply conjecture.

I'm new to this form and thought I'd chime in on this one. I am a friend of KVD and am familiar with the whole history of KVD Line & Lure Conditioner. I have also used Reel Magic, food grade silicone oil, Tangle Free, fabric softener and just about anything else that has ever been suggested as a line treatment. In my estimation, KVD Line & Lure works better then anything out there. It lasts longer than everything else and doesn't leave an oily feel like R/M and silicone and as someone mentioned won't eat plastic like R/M.

KVD really is the co-developer of the stuff and I know that he worked on perfecting the formula for about 1-½ years. It is the only product I've ever used that really tames down fluorocarbon. I fish P-Line and what a difference it makes. It makes it as soft as butter and really helps with knot strength. I also love it on Power Pro. Makes the line last longer and I don't get wind knots anymore. I also hear that most of the guys on the BASS tour are using it.

One of you said that it costs too much and I think you are right, but so does beer or a cup of coffee and a bottle of Line & Lure lasts months not 5 minutes! I am in the cosmetic manufacturing business and I know the costs and profit structures of retail products all too well. The bulk of the money in accessory products go to the distributors and retailers (about 65% and another 5% to 10% for shipping costs) so figure the manufacturer in the best case is really getting $3.00 for that $10.00 item at Bass Pro. Factor in the cost to make the product and package it at $1.25 and that leaves the manufacturer with $1.75 to pay for the taxes, advertising, insurance, overhead and payroll. Not what I'd call a gold mine. As this demonstrates, it's the middlemen and the retailers that drive the prices we pay for the products in stores. Also, KVD offers a 100% money back guarantee on his stuff does anybody else?

I'm also very happy with the KVD conditioner and I don't find it expensive at all, it last me the whole season.

The best/cheapest place I have found to get the KVD is from the mfr RMR Industries.  Ordering the 2 or 4 bottle package saves you on the cost and makes it cheaper than you can get it at BPS.
