Hello everyone. I would like to educate myself first before buying a rod because I don't want to end up with a piece of junk that will snap at the first minnow I catch with it. Basically, what I would like is a rod, either telescopic, or one made of several parts, that when disassembled comes no longer than 20 inches or so. It is not necessary, it can be 25 if really necessary, but generally, the shorter the better. I would like to be able to just carry it in a normal sized backpack. I was looking at the more expensive option first, the Shimano Exage, but I think that I don't really want to pay That much.

Then I found the Shakespeare Ugly Stik Travel Spin 6.6ft Rod. It's about 21 inches in length when disassembled. Though the exage is smaller, it is much more expensive.

Basically my question is about inexpensive, rods. Reliable and better yet, with a warranty of a year or something. I was checking out Cabela's IM-6 Telescopic Pack Rods, they seem to be pretty affordable and the 1 year warranty would replace the rods if they did break, but there are just too many reviews on those rods saying how they snap really easily. So I don't know what to choose. A recommendation of an affordable, compact, and durable rod would greatly be appreciated. Thank you.

Not sure if your looking for casting or spinning models...but you might want to check this spinning model out: http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_52902_100002002_100000000_100002000_100-2-2.

It also comes with a nice covered PVC case for transport. Not sure of the length right now.

I purchased it before Christmas and took it on a trout fishing trip in South America. I caught a few fish on it and was happy with the action. I paired it with a shimano sahara 1500.

I faced the same question a while back.  I had the Cabelas telescopic rod (I had 3 of them) and really didn't like it.  It was way too soft for any serious fishing.  A great travel rod at an affordable price is Bass Pro's Extreme travel rods (you can get them on sale for $60 if you wait).  They are 3 pieces and come in a very durable tube.  I think their overall length is 28", which is slightly longer then what you are looking for, but they are worth the trouble the added 2 inches will cause.  I have three of these rods (2 baitcasting and 1 spinning) and take them with me when space in the vehicle is an issue.  Bass Pro has a great customer service and will stand behind their rods.  These rods would be my suggestion.

If you are at all into fly fishing, fly rods come in as many as 7 pieces. You can nearly put them in your back pocket. LOL

If I'm going camping, traveling with someone else where space is a premium, I always carry the 4 piece fly rod.
