Handy Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 I am looking for a custom rod maker. I am in need of a custom rod and don't think I can do it correctly myself. Anyone here do it for others? Thanks. Paul Quote
Guest muddy Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 PM ALPSTER right on these forums HE MADE ME A HONEY!!!!!! 8-) Quote
TI_Bassin Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 Also try ReelMechanic, David G. he made me one last year. Quote
Super User Raul Posted January 5, 2008 Super User Posted January 5, 2008 Aside from the gentlemen already mentioned Mattman from Otterrods. Quote
Super User Micro Posted January 5, 2008 Super User Posted January 5, 2008 Duane Richards. He's a Virginia custom rod builder and his rods are works of art. I don't own one, but I've had the chance to fondle his beauties in a local shops that sells them. Simply amazing: http://duanerichards.proboards23.com/index.cgi?board=customrods Check out some samples: http://duanerichards.proboards23.com/index.cgi?board=customrods&action=display&thread=1168610401 When I work up my nerve to get a custom, I'm going to get him to build it. Super User Alpster Posted January 5, 2008 Super User Posted January 5, 2008 Also try ReelMechanic, David G. he made me one last year. Although I really appreciate the recommendations I get, I just don't have the resources and time to build rods commercially. I build a few rods a year for close friends and my own use. It's a hobby for me and it takes me months to get one done. I own my own business (not fishing related) and I can't get parts any cheaper than you can, etc.. You are much better off dealing with David Green (Reelmech) who is also D&G custom rods. He makes awesome rods at a reasonable price and will get them to you much quicker than I could. He does this for a living and I can't compete with him on any level. If I build you a rod, it's because I love ya. If I charged for my time it would cost $10,000 for a rod and it still wouldn't be as nice as one of D&G's. Stick with the pros and you won't be disappointed. JMHO Ronnie Quote
Super User 5bass Posted January 5, 2008 Super User Posted January 5, 2008 Well since, Alpster bowed out, I would recommend "flechero". Although I've never fished any of his rods, I have seen them in person and he does some fine work. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted January 5, 2008 Super User Posted January 5, 2008 Regardles who makes it, post pictures for us to see. Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted January 5, 2008 Super User Posted January 5, 2008 I also recommend DG Rod Works. He'll be building my 2nd "custom" rod soon. http://www.rod-crafting.com/index.html Quote
Super User Gone_Phishin Posted January 6, 2008 Super User Posted January 6, 2008 I just looked through a large quantity of Duane Richard's photos.....WOW. Freakin' unbelievable. Truly special looking rods. Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted January 6, 2008 Super User Posted January 6, 2008 Truly special looking rods. True, they look very "pretty" but they also look heavy with those big epoxy ramps. Aside from that, all the "bling" just doesn't appeal to me. They would look good as ornamental decoration in the home office etc, but I didn't see one rod there I would want to fish with. I'm not saying this guys rods suck, I'm sure he'd have no problem with the stealth builds I prefer, I'm just saying the bling ain't my style. Quote
mike bat Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 i had a rod built by DG ROD WORKS ..... its a sweet stick ,,, its a custom jig rod .... david really did a killer job and does understand how to make a truly killer stick .... i told him what i wanted and he made it happen ,,, he also put progress photos up on his web site so i could see the progress ..... from start to finish it olny took him a few days to get the rod in my hands ..... he builds on st croix blanks witch is a big plus in my book .... he also did the eye wrappes to match my reel .... he is a pro and super easy to deal with .... i must also tell you im in no way sponsered or in any type of bisness with dg rod works ..... david just makes a killer stick and deserves a recomendation .... ;D Quote
Super User Jimzee Posted January 6, 2008 Super User Posted January 6, 2008 I love those cork handles he uses. Pretty awesome stick there DG Rod Works. 8-) Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 "Flechero" builds my rods. I'm working on saving up now for a nice topwater rod. From the site, I also recommend Reelmechanic or DG rod works (same guy) We've seen quite a few rods from these guys, awesome stuff. Rod by Flechero Quote
dbass Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 This gentleman is looking for a 6' MHF 2pc. rod. I have informed him that SC doesn't have 2pc blanks in his power or length, in any high end blanks. The only 2pc blanks are in the Premier (SC2) blank, and again not in his rating and length. Maybe Flechero can best serve him and has a connection for 2pc blanks............ Tight Lines!!!! Quote
mike bat Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 low bugdet ,,, what kind of reel do you have on that stick ???? is that a daiwa terra ??? Quote
Super User flechero Posted January 7, 2008 Super User Posted January 7, 2008 Thanks Scott and Russ for the recommendations, I appreciate it. (Russ- wipe off the cork once in a while!! ;D) I fall somewhere in between Alpster and ReelMech... I build a limited number of rods (the exact number is set by Mrs. Flechero, who bases it on how much time I spend with her. ...lol) This gentleman is looking for a 6' MHF 2pc. rod That's an odd ball rod for sure... Any CTS blank can be ordered in a 2 pc., but there is no telling what the wait time will be for production. That's my only thought off hand. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted January 7, 2008 Super User Posted January 7, 2008 Check out George's Custom Rods. Just do a web search for him. Quote
dbass Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 With the amount of reel servicing I get this time of year, and the 3 custom rods I have already in front of him. My turnaround time is getting longer, and I wouldn't even be able to get to a rod for him until the last part of April or first of May.. Quote
Branuss04 Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 low bugdet ,,, what kind of reel do you have on that stick ???? is that a daiwa terra ??? YES Quote
Red Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 even though alpser cant do it, i have to say that he also built me a bitchin' rod....it is even sweeter with my new revo on it Quote
lubina Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 I have custom rods from 2 builders, David Green, I got one and another in route and 4 rods from George Roth. Highly recommend both of them. Quote

Low_Budget_Hooker Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Tierra-Yes Clean the cork????? You crazy? Never happen, that grime is made of blood, sweat and tears,...literally,lol. Quote
Super User David P Posted January 10, 2008 Super User Posted January 10, 2008 Dang, Russ, when you coming to California again, so I can steal that rod? Thing is a beauty, I like the seat. Guys, if you're looking for a greatly priced custom rod, try G-Blanks. $150 shipped I believe it is, and he makes them QUICK. Took him a week to have a custom made rod at my door. Not to mention, quality is GREAT. It gets the same amount of use, if not more, as my GLX rod. Quote
