TrickyVT1887 Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 So got the new Saros for Christmas, my girlfriend saw me eying it in the store and she got it for me. I was rather happy after unwrapping it then i opened the box noticed the screw in handle that seemed a little different from all my other Shimanos then i spun the handle a few times getting a feel for the reel and it seemed rather stiff. So i went to Gander Mtn to check it against the display reel which was noticeably smoother than mine but then i asked to see the new Stradic as well and IMO the new series of reels don't feel near as smooth as the older stradics and i took a NIB Symetre to compare to the new Saros and Stradic and it felt better than both of them so in turn i returned the reel and got another 2500 Symetre. i left happy with a new reel and a spool of P-Line and my Girlfriend left happy with some cash in her pocket. Anyone else have any experiences with the new shimanos? Quote
Replica. Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 I have read that the new direct drive (screw in handle) takes away some of the smoothness. Quote
Redsyn Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 I actually prefer the screw in handle because the bend in the handle which I was told was a "power" handle design. I do not think it effects the smoothness of the reel. It has less chance to fold up under pressure. I have a shimano Ultegra which has the same style handle and it is super smooth. I also played w/ the saros few weeks ago at bps and I was impressed at how smooth it was. Wish I would have also check out the new stradic. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted January 2, 2008 Super User Posted January 2, 2008 I have not seen the new Saros but I got the new Stradic for Christmas and it is a sweet reel. It as smooth if not smoother than my older Sustain. I had a chance to cast it around over the holidays before the artic air moved in and it was a pleasure to play with. I have yet to catch anything of course but spring will be here soon enough. I will give it a full season of fishing and abuse before I say it is as good a value as the old Stradics. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted January 2, 2008 Super User Posted January 2, 2008 I have read that the new direct drive (screw in handle) takes away some of the smoothness. I don't think that is the case at all. Direct drive is a feature previously found only in the Stella. This is one of the major upgrades incorporated into the new Stradic 2500FI. I think you will like this feature VERY much! Quote
Hooked_On_Bass Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 Anyone else have any experiences with the new shimanos? I got a new Saros 2500F (and a 6' 6'' MH/F Crucial to put it on ;D) and I couldn't be more impressed. I find it extremely smooth and it seems very durable. I haven't fished with it yet (da*n ice >), but will put it to the test this year. Quote
oxbowbass Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 I got my wife a new Stradic 3000 married to a Compre for Christmas. IMO, the new reel's action seems a little more stiff than the old series of reel. On the other hand, it looks and feels as though it is made to a somewhat higher standard. It feels like it might have a little more cranking power (?) Quote

The new gears cause a little noise and may not be as smooth, but are much more durable (this came from shimano customer service). Quote
TrickyVT1887 Posted January 3, 2008 Author Posted January 3, 2008 i read that the gears were more durable as well and that some of the smoothness is sacrificed as a result but i have yet to strip the gears in one of my shimanos so that isn't really a major concern to me Quote
Triton9 Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 their new line is great. my dad just bought one of the new sustains and it is awesome. super smooth, light and strong, plus it looks great ;)great reel Quote
SpringCantComeSoonEnough Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 I got a Stradic 2500 FI for Christmas, and I love it! If it feels a little rough, lube it up a with a few drops of the oil that comes with it. It'll loosen up pretty quickly. My new Stradic wasn't as smooth as my old Stradics out of the box, but a few drops of oil later, and its SWEET. Perfect reel for my IMX. ;D Quote

Perfect reel for my IMX. ;D I have almost the same setup - I just picked up a Stradic FI 3000 last week and put it on my IMX, and I absolutely love the setup. I would make love to it if I could ;D Seriously though, it's a really nice reel, and it feels super solid yet smooth. I've also found that it casts noticeably longer than my Supreme - could be the new spool design. But same rod, same line, same lure, different reel, fishing the same place, I noticed that it definitely casts a little farther. Quote
jacktrevally Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 Owning both a Stella FB and a Stella FD, I have to say that the re-designed FD is smoother than the FB. Not only for the Stella but the new FD ELF a japanese version is as smooth as the Stella FD. Eventhough the ELF is one sixth of the price of the Stella. Shimano is excelling itself with the FD Technology! Thumbs up Shimano! Even the certate custom R doesn't come near as the ELF in smoothness! Quote

Super User FishTank Posted January 8, 2008 Super User Posted January 8, 2008 I took my new Stradic 2500 FI out for another test drive yesterday and tested out one the worst lines, IMHO, for spinning reels> Trilene XT #8. This line is usually like fishing with a slinky but it performed quite well on the new Stardic. When I switched over to using it on my old Stradic it was as bad as always. I am not sure how Shimano got this reel to lay the line better on the spool and cast better but I am impressed so far. One other thing, I spoolled the old Stradic first then used the remainder of the line on the new one. Quote
