ABC123 Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 I've seen more than once where someone has stated that the lower priced St Croix's are not a good "value". In that price range, you could look at the Cabela's Fish eagle II rods, BPS's rods, Shimano, ect... Select Fenwick HMX's are on sale at Cabela's. Another $20 will get you a Team Allstar or Cabela's Fish eagle HML which have select rods on special too. Quote
Guest muddy Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 Actually there are some 10 bucks cheaper that will also fit wondefully I would get 6'6" or a 7' med action rod Fenwick GT All Star instinct Cabelas Eagle II ( thats at 80 bucks) Shimano Clarus and Convergance( thats alo 10 bucks more at 80)\ The St Croix Triumph was all right but the INSTNICT is a better rod at this pricing point, The Premier was a huge disapointment , I went through several of em and they all lost an insert in either the tip or stripping guide, and is a common problem, Theuy really are great rods from the Avid series and up! Bob Kavanaugh Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 I have 2 of the All Star Instinct rods. They are certainly well built, have nice cork and solid reel seats. My only observation is that they are a tad heavy, but at the 59.99 price point, it's an acceptable trade off. You'll be happy with it. Quote

Thefishy1 Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 How light is light 4lb test or 10lb Moderate would be better for 4-6lb test because it is more forgiving, and the fish would not break your line Fast would be better for 8-10lb because you can fish bigger lures that need more hook-setting power Quote

From the sounds of it you guys are recommending the All Star Instinct. I mainly am going to be using it for plastics. I will be using it for some crank baits and spinners. I am going to get Fast/Medium, should I get 6'6" or 7'? Quote

RW and I got a little heated one day on this, but I honestly have had ZERO ISSUES with mine. I found it to be a nice rod for $60. I will say this.......I have upgraded, I found a few St Croix Avids on sale for $99, and even with out fishing them yet they feel much better than the Triumph. I am going to keep my Triumph, as I like it, and for backup. I have several rods in this price range, most will be sold due to my upgrade, but like I said I will keep the Triumph, plus my BPS Extreme 7' M spinning rod, and my Fenwick HMX's, those IMHO are the best rods you can get for less than $100. The entire issue is really about quality control. The components are what might be expected at the pricing point, but my issue was (is) about delivering a "quality" product at ANY pricing point. St. Croix has established a reputation for quality over a period of decades. I do NOT like that history being blemished. Quote

Not to cause a problem but I have had good experiences with the premier, and hoping even better with the Avids. I bouth 3 premiers for myself, a spinning for my girlfriend, and a casting rod for my little brother and have not had any problems with any of them. And to say the least they have been beaten up pond fishing. My only complaint is the Action ratings are not accurate, as my MH fishes like a pool cue although I love the 6'6 MF I got my little brother. The spinning rod...well its a spinning rod and has alot better sensitivity than what I or my girlfriend was use to and produces more fish. Either way I am very interested in more bang for the buck and am not convinced I would buy more premiers. Corey Quote

I feel it's a good balance between the more accurate casting 6' and shorter rods, and the 7' and longer, farther casting rods. It comes down to what you want out of the rod, and what length works best for where it's being used (shore or boat). Quote
