What is your preferred spending limit? because as spinning reels go you can pay almost anything for one, but you could get a nice one for around 30-40 bucks.

It all depends on your budget. Most of the recommendations from our members will be based on their "favorite brand". Here are a couple of ideas:

For around $80, the Shimano Symetre and Stradic 2500FH (on sale) are the "best values" in the Shimano line-up. The new Stradic 2500FI may be the most radically redesigned reel Shimano has introduced in several years. This reel incorporates many of the features previously available only in the Stella. If money is of no concern, the Stella is "special".

The Shimano motto is : Strong, smooth, quiet and reliant. I have found these reels live up to their reputation. With proper maintainence, you can expect them to perform flawlessly for many years. Reels I have owned for ten years fish exactly as they did when they were new, right out of the box.

Pflueger President: you can't go wrong! My favorite reel, tried and true 8-)

I know this from experience, you will get a lot of great suggestions on a lot of different reels. Pay attention to the guys who know from actually using what they reccomend. In the end it is best to take what ever rod you are going to put it on and see how it feels to you, in the store and before you buy it. There are many quality choices in this pricing range!

I would second the Shimano Symetre, I bot one used and it is a fantastic reel and if I used spinning tackle more often I would own more of them.  I think I picked mine up for $50 shipped in excellent condition.  I have also fished a Pflueger President and was impressed although it was a borrowed combo so I do not have the prolonged experience I do with the Symetere.  ;)

Shimano Sedona is not too bad of a choice either ;)

Abu Garcia Cardinals.  The sleeper is the 600 ALB.  Powerful, smooth, great bearings and an ultra-good drag.  About $75.

If you want to spend up to $120, then I highly recommend the Cardinal 800 series.  Best spinning reel I've ever held.

I just bought a shimano stradic 2500FI today on ebay for $135.  I know its a little out of your price range but it is really nice.  I can't wait for it to get here.  I couldnt find any stradic 2500FH online but I did find the new Saros for about $100 online.  The symetre is also a good deal at $79 retail.

Count me in as a Pflueger Presidant fan, at $59 you can't go wrong. Also shop around, the Pflueger Supreme can be had $10 or so cheaper on e-bay NIB. IMHO that is THE new benchmark for sub $100 spinning reels. I also like most of Daiwa's reels in this price range. I have a 4 year old Laguna that is built like a tank, an Exceler, and a Capricorn. All solid reels that will last a long time.

Symetre, discounted Stradic FH, or Pflueger President or Supreme, you can't go wrong.  I have the most experience with the Supreme.  Very nice reel - lightweight, smooth drag, solid bail, and pretty sexy  ;)
