JKLOCK Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 I just purchased the Daiwa Exceler Spinning Reel from Tackle Warehouse for $59.99 and free shipping. I love it. I have several Shimano reels and this one casts better. http://www.***.com/descpageRLSDAIWA-DES.html Seniorbasser Quote

It's a nice reel, but it is HEAVY. I had a 4000 series and it weighed over 13 ozs. I gave it away and bought a 502 ALB to put on the same rod. The ALB is very nice. It's smooth, well made and has a good drag. However, if you don't mid spending another $5-$10 the new 600 ALB is the way to go. You get upgraded bearings over the 500 ALB, and a carbon matrix drag the 500 doesn't have. The 500 is a very nice reel and seemed to do well in Tackle Tour's review: http://www.tackletour.com/reviewabugarciacardinal502alb.html Quote
ABC123 Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 I would look at the new Pflueger Asaro. It's lighter, cheaper, and has the same basic components as the President. Quote
Guest muddy Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 I would look at the new Pflueger Asaro. It's lighter, cheaper, and has the same basic components as the President. I have not used the Asaro yet, it is lighter, it has less expensive components from the BB's to the handle to the spool. I would still at this point stay with the PRESIDENT. THEY HAVE NEVER DISAPOINTED ME or many of my friends Quote
Thefishy1 Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 I would look at the new Pflueger Asaro. It's lighter, cheaper, and has the same basic components as the President. not to mention a nice shade of blue. But overall I would go with the president, and if Muddy reads this he will stand behind it 100% when I say that it is one amazing piece of hardware that will last you for years and years Quote
MN Basser Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 SHIMANO SEDONA 2500FB 5:2:1 $50!!! I LOVE MINE! Quote

The spools are the same, and, I heard the President no longer has the rosewood knob, so the handles are the same. I guess, if the double shielded bearings ar important, than maybe it's worth the $10. Jake P Posted January 5, 2008 Author Posted January 5, 2008 The president has caught my eye more than anything else becuase for one it is one of the sharpest looking reels ive seen and another is becuase of all the reviews and things i hear about how good and long lasting it is and its smoothness. I still like the cardinal though....... il make my decision at bass pro. Thanks for the input guys. Quote

The spool on the president is way better than on the Assaro, the BB's are better although it does not affect castability on a spinning reel it makes the retrive smoother. I have reeled both and love the action on the President better. The rosewood knob for some reason is hated by a lot of fisherman, it has been the consistent knock against the reel. Some of my friends go to a local shop and have them taken off and a Paddle/Rubber type handle put on> Personally I love the wodden handle. Pflueger seems to have responded to the one consitntly negative comment being made about the President. It is still the best value and well made spinning reel out there . I picked an Asaro up when I went to Cabelas. put it on a rod in the store to get an idea. I will stick with the Presidents. To be fair , some of my buddies will buy them and it will be at least a season to get a good idea of how they will hold up. But so far the 10 buck difference semms more than worth it for a proven and reliable reel/ Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted January 5, 2008 Super User Posted January 5, 2008 For just a few more bucks you could get a Shimano Symetre or the discontinued Stradic on sale. These are considered the "Best Values" in the Shimano line-up. Both have a reputation built on the motto: Strong, Smooth, Silent and Reliant. With proper maintainance, you should expect more than a decade of service. In ten years these reels will perform exactly the same as they did the day you first took them out of the box. Quote
Guest muddy Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 RW gave me a stradic last year at the Fork Trip, it is an excellent reel. I still prefer FLOOGERS but that Stradic is one great reel also! Quote
