Davis Posted September 26, 2007 Posted September 26, 2007 Just picked up some zoom horny toads and had a chance to fish them yesterday. The leg action is great but as soon as you stop swimming them they just lay motionless on a zoom 5/0 hook and do a semi-helicopter to the bottom. So I take it these are just used for swimming them? Going to be getting in some Gambler Cane Toads. These have the kicker feet to them. How does these get worked? I guess I'm just looking for ways to work these two different frogs and how to properly use them so I get the most out of there actions. Thanks! Quote
ring fry Posted September 26, 2007 Posted September 26, 2007 I can't tell you how many bags of horny toads I've been through this summer. I usually use 5/0 gamy and buzz it over vegitation, wood, or through pads. I hold the rod tip high till I get to the edge of whatever I'm fishing then stop, drop the rod, let it sink and hold on. There is also a hook with a wedge on the front that looks like it would help it stay up better but haven't tried it yet. Most of my fish have been caught while buzzing it on top. Quote
Guest avid Posted September 26, 2007 Posted September 26, 2007 Quote So I take it these are just used for swimming them? uMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM, Nope. like ring fry, the horney toad is one of mainstays. It's a terrific bass catcher. It is as nearly a perfectly weedless lure as you can find. I put a 1/32 oz split shot right at the nose and rig it with a 5/0 owner riggin hook. My favorite technique is to cast it right into the emergent vegetation and buzz it. If it makes it to the weedline without getting blasted, I kill the motion and let it slowly "helicopter" down. Once on the bottom, I'll hop it a few times like a plastic worm, then i'll finish the retrieve by buzzing it all the way back to the boat. I have used the horney toad as a jig trailer, a flippin bait, a c-rig bait, and anyway else I can think of. I have had none left, and so picked up pieces off the floor of the boat. One time I did this as a spinnerbait trailer using one leg. It was a killer. go git em Quote

I was buzzing it a bit too last night but wasn't sure if I could have been doing something different. The 5/0 Zoom hooks with the screw really kept the bait intact. Was impressed at the sharpness of the Zoom hook as well. Thanks for your response. Quote

rbrick Posted September 26, 2007 Posted September 26, 2007 I fish the Gambler Cane Toads quite often. They will catch bass on top, subsurface and crawled across the bottom. They are wider than most toads and sink more slowly. They have the paddle legs and ridges on the body so they create quite a commotion.Great bait. Avalonjohn44 Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 I like the horny toad, but prefer to use the Gambler Cane Toad. It is a great bait, and the colors are cool... To me it seems the fish hold onto the Cane Toad longer, it is softer than the zoom horny toad, and stinks to high Heaven. The fat ridged/serrated style body and kicker legs create a ton of vibration and commotion. I get fewer roll-overs on this bait too. Also, I fish it topwater and on the bottom with success. I have been impressed with everything I've fished by Gambler, I just picked up some giggy sticks and giggy snakes. Can't wait to try 'em. Quote

I have the bullfrog color in the Zoom horny toad currently. Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 My favorite two colors are Green Pepper Shad and Brown Pepper Shad. I have Green Pumpkin Pearl Swirl, but have not tried it yet, since the other two have worked so well for me. Quote
Boett43 Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 I know its a different kind of lure buy i have a ton of sucess with the SRPO Bronzeye frog it amazing what kind of slop you can throw this lure in and pull out a WHOPPER of a bass..Just a Thought!! BIG B Quote
Numpty Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 Sorry if this is a stupid question... What does everyone mean by "Buzzing" them? Does this mean reel them in fast? Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 It means keeping them on the surface and making their feet gurgle thru the water like a buzzbait. Quote

BIG B Heck with that lol. I had one and used it. Looked great in the water but around my 10th cast I snagged a tree on the windup of my cast (don't ask) and the frog snapped off and sailed a good 80 feet into the water. I didn't have my raft with me so there was no retrieving it. I know its not the frogs fault but I feel that the good Lord doesn't want me spending 7 bucks on a frog lol. It's a sign. ;D Quote
Davis Posted September 28, 2007 Author Posted September 28, 2007 Quote I think you can go to the pet store and get a really authentic frog for 7 bucks! LOL (not sure how to hook him though) b When I hooked live frogs we just hooked them up on the roof of there mouth just past the lips. They stayed alive for a long time. Caught some nice bass off of them but they are a pain to handle in the water if you keep them alive. Haven't done this since I was a teen though. Quote

Cory20 Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 When picking a color for a top water frog there are lots of choices. Fish will understand commotion and contrast (against the sky and cover) better than actual color. I like junebug with chartreuse kickers or a white belly with a dark back. Quote
Tokyo Tony Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 I've always thought it was funny how the frog companies often come up with intricate designs and different colors on the back of the frog, designs that the fish may see 1/500 casts. They look cool to the fisherman, but they really don't make a bit of difference to the fish. For me, give me a black, green, or brown frog and I'm happy. I've found the SIZMIC toads in all black are awesome for night fishing. Quote

Reminds me of a quote from a lure company.....When the guy was asked if Fish really like that lure, He stated.....We don't sell these to fish. Don't know who or when this was said...just stuck in my head.....always think of it when the Baitmonkey makes an appearance. Quote
