Super User Redlinerobert Posted January 2, 2008 Super User Posted January 2, 2008 So this year I'm going to focus on modding some of my reels. The first will be a JDM Daiwa Pixy and a USA market Sol. I'm waiting for the Pixy to come in from Japan, and sending them out to get "hot rodded". Stay tuned for updates. Quote
Super User Raul Posted January 2, 2008 Super User Posted January 2, 2008 The only two mods I would do to a Pixy would be the drag pads for beefier ones and probably cork knobs to see if I can shave away that 0.1 oz difference in weight it has with the Steez. To the Sol ...... maybe a red spool and the obligated handle swap for aTDZ handle. To tell you the truth I 'm not much of a tweak fanatic. :-/, I like them as they are. Quote

Super User Redlinerobert Posted January 2, 2008 Author Super User Posted January 2, 2008 I have Lubina from the board to thank. He turned me onto a modded Pixy, Aptly named, "Pixzilla" Quote
Super User Jimzee Posted January 2, 2008 Super User Posted January 2, 2008 I am hot rodding my Pixy right now. Just got some ZPI SiC bearings and a ZPI 85mm Platinum Handle with some cork grips. Also got some Carbontex drag washers to throw in the mix. Gonna do the same thing to the Steez after I get finished with the Pixy. Got a 90mm carbon I'ZE swept handle on the way for it. I love doing that stuff. Quote
Super User Gone_Phishin Posted January 2, 2008 Super User Posted January 2, 2008 This is something I'd really love to get into. I sent a Zillion ouit last year for drag and bearings upgrade, and wow, now it's like a grenade launcher. Talk about an awesome froggin'/slop reel. And it already palmed well for such a tough reel. I have a TDZ and Sol I planned on sending out this winter to get tuned, but I'd really like to study up and learn the process myself. The whole personal satisfaction thing comes into play here. It's kinda like catching a lunker on a plastic you poured yourself. For anyone with the Sol, the TDZ handle upgrade Raul mentioned is well worth it. Especiallly if you've been using your Sol for cranks /spinnerbaits. Just contact Daiwa. Quote
Red Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 i only ever hear about diawa's getting mods...is there nothing available for Abu, shimano, quantum? Cliff Quote
Super User Raul Posted January 2, 2008 Super User Posted January 2, 2008 i only ever hear about diawa's getting mods...is there nothing available for Abu, shimano, quantum?Cliff Oh yes there is stuff for Shimano and Garcia: handles, bearings, spools, drag pads. Only catch is when you finish tweaking with your reel adding the cost of upgrades to the cost of the reel for the same money you could have purchased a more expensive reel that the one you just tweaked that already had the upgrades you wanted in the first place. Specially those aftermarket spools and handles are anything but cheap. Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted January 3, 2008 Super User Posted January 3, 2008 Timely topic. I just started tweakin my Millionaire's. These are the CV-X103's that were discontinued last year. I got "em on clearance for less than half price, so with the parts costs, I'm still at a bit less than regular price for the reels. Got the Carbontex drag washers and TDZ handles on order. I'm hoping they'll be here before we leave for Florida this Friday. I've already polished the shims and spool ends for free spooling. Also polished all the contact spots for the engage/disengage mechanisms. Got the idea for that from an article on tackle tour. They did Sol, the Millionaire is similar. The re-engage is now very smooth and almost effortless. The original Millionaire is 3+1 bearings. I replaced the drive shaft bushings with bearings, and the outer pinion gear bushings with bearings. I robbed the bearings for this from some older Quantum and Daiwa reels. Got new bearings on order now that I know what will fit and work. With the handle upgrade, the reels will now be 9+1 bearings. Should be super smooth. They feel really good now with the used bearings and stock handles. If the parts don't get here soon I won't know for sure until the BassResource.com roadtrip. These are the reels I use for cranking and spinnerbaits, so the smoother the better. The only other upgrades I might consider is better bearings for the spool. The reels already are so smooth on the cast that better bearings might be a step in the backlash direction. I'm gonna use them for a while before I make that decision. I've gone about as far as I'm willing to go on this project in terms of cash out of pocket. It's been interesting so far. Can't wait to see how they actually perform on the water. Quote

You will not regret any money expended.... In addition mine has the TD-Z guide line ( the best ever ), another bearing at the worm shaft and the Sol drag pack at 8.8 lbs....I rather have sex with it than with my wife ( just kiddi'n ) : I call it Pixarro. lubina Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 , quantum?Cliff Sure, Ceramic ABEC 5 spool support bearings, for Accurist and Energy same size than Steez and Revo. TD-Z handle, you will have to file down the inner cup but since it is magnesium take 2 min. and polishing of the spool shaft and pinion. That is what I have on mine flipp'n reels Quote

Hey Robert, Are these going to actually get done, or turn out like the Itö did?? ;D ;D These will get done my friend. Parts have already been ordered. The proble with the Ito was that no one was able to anodize the reel casing, due to it being cast aluminum and not machined. I was told by every source that the cast aluminum has too much silicone in it, and would not take to the anodizing. Oh well, can't say we didn't try. Quote
Super User .RM. Posted January 3, 2008 Super User Posted January 3, 2008 I see. The Silicon must have been a release for the mold then. I was under the impression that the cast frames were done in centrificale molds. Oh well good luck on your re-mods... The most modding I have been doing lately is drag pad upgrades and bearing upgrades. Tight Lines in 08!!! Quote
Super User islandbass Posted January 3, 2008 Super User Posted January 3, 2008 Lubina, Holy smokes, that looks sweet! And the handle is on the "correct" side too. ;D At first, I considered only getting a red pixy, but now I'm having second thoughts. The tweety yellow is starting to look really good to me. 8-) Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted January 3, 2008 Author Super User Posted January 3, 2008 Ok boys, Pixy arrived today. Going out tomorrow. I will post before and after pictures. Quote
