RLinNH Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 I discovered Crank Baits 2 seasons ago, and I am in love with them. I have been fishing them on my St. Croix Premier Heavy Power with a Mod-Fast Action on my Quantum Energy PT 6.3.1 Bait Casting Reel. This was originally my Soft plastics set up, but I fell in love with casting Cranks, so the set up does double duty. Well, I'd like to pick up a set up just for my Crank Baits. What type of action am I looking for as far as the Rod is concerned? I know that I am sticking with the Quantum Energy Reels as I would like to find a faster one for my cranks though. Looking forward to the replies and have a safe and Happy New Year. Quote
RLinNH Posted December 31, 2007 Author Posted December 31, 2007 Looks like I'll be sticking with the 6.3.1 Return rate as Quantum doesn't make a reel in left hand retrieve in any other retrieve speeds. :-/ Quote
RLinNH Posted December 31, 2007 Author Posted December 31, 2007 CBR843 from G-Loomis. It's one of their Crank Bait Rods in a Medium Action that is 7 ft long. Anyone else have this rod ? Recommend it? Looks like the way I am leaning right now. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 31, 2007 Super User Posted December 31, 2007 Although this has become my "jerkbait rod", for the past several years I considered it my "all-around rod" for treble hook lures: St. Croix Avid AC66MF/ Shimano Calais (now a Metanium). For shallow cranks I now have a St. Croix Avid AC70MM/ Shimano Chronarch. For bigger lures and deep cranking, Lamiglas SR705R/ Shimano CTE200GT. Quote

Looks like the way I am leaning right now. This is the rod I have and it works great. In your other post, you mentioned that you are looking for a reel faster than 6.3:1? That seems a little fast to me for cranks..can't imagine going faster. I would think it would wear you out deep cranking with 6.3 or faster. Just my .02 FD Quote
fathom Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 you may wanna look at the cbr 845...a good, powerful rod for all around cranking...got a calais 100a on mine and it pretty much handles 90% of my moving lures. if you wanna stay in the croix line, the 70mh/m is pretty close to the cbr 845. Super User .dsaavedra. Posted December 31, 2007 Super User Posted December 31, 2007 i have a st. croix avid crankbait rod AC66MM with a shimano citica100dsv reel and i havent had a chance to use it yet but the rod has just the right amount of flex for the shallow to medium cranking i do and the 6.2:1 reel is perfect for me. Joel W Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 Looks like I'm in the minority here, but I like a slower retrieve for my cranks and thus use a Daiwa DTA 150A with a 5.2 to 1 ratio. Looking for a new shallow to medium depth crankin' stick myself. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted December 31, 2007 Super User Posted December 31, 2007 Crankbait rods? Fiberglass all the way. I use a 7'6" fiberglass crankin' rod for ALL deep diving baits. I've also got an old Browning Silaflex glass rod that I use for shallow cranks...it's a great rod, does a fantastic job and BPS still sells them for $35....what a steal! Quote

They are not good with deep divers (Norman DD22's and Rapala DT16s) but they are amazing with shallow and mid diving baits. Quote
