Bronzeback117 Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 Hello all! This is my first post on here. I just got my Bass Pro Shops 2008 master catalog today. I am looking into getting a new spinning reel for the new season. I have narrowed it down between the Pflueger Supreme and the Shimano Symetre. Just looking for some advice from experienced users. Thanks in advance! Quote
Super User FishTank Posted December 27, 2007 Super User Posted December 27, 2007 Welcome the forum. You will get several informed answers on your question. IMHO, both are great reels but my personal preference is Shimano. It is best to get both out of the box, mount it to the rod you want and see what feels best. Good luck...... Quote
Super User 5bass Posted December 27, 2007 Super User Posted December 27, 2007 I'm not a Shimano fan so I would recommend the Supreme. I own several of the Supreme's MG's and they have been great so far. Quote
Thefishy1 Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 I just got my supreme last week and have broken it in already, and IMHO I think that it is the best spinning reel for the money. I have tried the high end shakespere (40$), and lower end shimano (40-50$) and some pinnacles, but the Supreme has smoother drag, lighter weight, and better overall casting and line twist control than all of them. I find that almost all Pfluegers are great for the cost. Quote

I have a Symmetre but not a Supreme. I do own a President and would say it compares very well. I don't think you can go wrong either way. Take care of the baitmonkey and buy them both! LOL Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 27, 2007 Super User Posted December 27, 2007 Welcome aboard! Most of the guys are very prejudiced, everyone has their favorite manufacturer. The Pflueger guys all like the the Supreme. Many members of the Shimano Possee think the Symetre is the "best value" in the Shimano line-up. I would suggest shopping around a little more, you might find the Shimano Stradic 2500FH on sale for about the same price ($79). That would be my pick. Quote
Tokyo Tony Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 Functionally, you can't go wrong with either. They're both nice reels. It really does depend on which you like better when you hold them in your hands, but no one can say one of them is hands down better than the other. I've had Symetres and I have a Supreme, and personally, I prefer the feel of the Shimano, but I frequently use the Supreme and it works great. Quote

Perhaps biased would be a better word, but I recommend the Pfleuger. I like both manufacturers, and I feel that Pfleuger makes a slightly better spinning reel. Both are great, though. Oh, almost forgot- Welcome aboard! Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted December 27, 2007 Super User Posted December 27, 2007 I own a Symetre, the only Shimano in my home. I absolutely love it and would consider buying another one should the need arise. Those Supremes are tiiiiiiight looking though.... Quote
Tokyo Tony Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 Those Supremes are tiiiiiiight looking though.... Definitely - the spool and drag knob are freakin' beautiful. I love the gold trim - it looks fit for a king. I took mine mostly apart the other night for a grease job and it's also gorgeous on the inside. I just need to find a girl that's the same ;D Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted December 27, 2007 Super User Posted December 27, 2007 from an ex shimbindo man i say get the supreme.or go for the newer supreme. http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_98349_100001002_100000000_100001000_100-1-2 Quote
Super User 5bass Posted December 27, 2007 Super User Posted December 27, 2007 That XT will be the next spinning reel I buy. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted December 27, 2007 Super User Posted December 27, 2007 That XT will be the next spinning reel I buy. +1 8-) Quote
Al Wolbach Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 I have both and I prefer the Supreme, but you would probably be happy with either. I have been doing a lot of Crappie fishing recently with both reels and the Supreme seems to have less line twist than the Symetre. No scientific research here, just an observation that may not be accurate(to many variables, although the rods and line are the same). Both are very good reels.........................Al Quote
67Ghost Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 I would save an extra $20 and get the old discontinued Stradic on clearance for about $99. Quote
Popeye Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 I opted to buy Pflueger when I bought all my new gear. I researched and read as many reviews and recommendations as I could find/get on the net and the Pfluegers just appealed to me more than the Shimanos. I have a Supreme, President, and Trion. They are all very nice, BUT the Supreme is awesome. I can't wait to use them all!! Quote

Bronzeback117 Posted December 28, 2007 Author Posted December 28, 2007 Thanks for the input guys. I tried out both of them at my local Gander Mountain. I think I like the feel of the Pflueger a little better. I am going to go with that. Plus, I have had Shimano most of my life, I guess I am looking for something different. Quote
