Hey all...

Hope everyone had a great Christmas..

I am thinking about adding a new spinning reel to the group. I've been looking at the Pflueger President Series specifically the model 6740. Any one have any experience with these reels?

Any other recommendations?

Thanks in advance,

ajr

My brother has a President, and it's a very nice reel, especially for the money.  My only problem with it is that it's very heavy, but other than that, it's very smooth, casts well, and has a smooth drag.

One thing you may want to consider is looking at the Supreme.  I think it's like 20 bucks or so more, but it seems like it's half the weight.  It's really light, but it depends on your preference.  I think other than the weight they're very similar, and my brother actually prefers the heavier reel.

I've seen a lot of problems with them.  For the money, a president has a cheap graphite frame and a shimano sahara has a metal from and is smoother for the same price.  The Diawa Exceller is also a nicer reel for the same price.

The only spiining reel I use, and I love them, They are very popular in my neck of the woods. I switched a long time ago from Mitchell, and have never looked back. I can tell you that not only me, but both my fishing partners and several friends fish about 20 of these spinning reels , from weekend warriors to guys in the club that fish at least a 100 days a year and guys who fish tournys WITH NO I MEAN NO ISSUES.Some ot the tourny guys get one of the local takle shops to customize the handles, they do not care for the elongated wood grips, they get them cut out and have smaller rubber paddles put on them.

I like the 35 size the best but a lot use the 40 It is a great product for a great price.

PS I beleive you live close to LBH ask him to try one I know he fishes em also 8-)

Well, since you asked: At the comparable pricing point, the Shimano Symetre or the discounted Stradic would be two reels to consider. Both of these reels are favorites among Shimano fans.

I have 1 President and 3 Supreme, Pflueger spinning reels. IMO, the Presidents are top of the line Graphite reels. They are probably the best value in graphite chassis reels on the market. With that said, I would rather spend the $$$ on the Supremes. The President's, Supreme's, Medalist's, Sahara's, Sedona's, Stradic's, Symetre's, ect... are in a very competative price point. There will alway's be trade off's choosing one brand over the other, but in the end, the value is close among the major brands, and even some of the lesser known brands.

hey Bass,

I own a President in the 6730 size. I love it only thing I maybe wish is poss I should have bought the 6735 for what I fish for. That said 4lb bass are not a problem on this, smooth drag nice smooth operation and a sharp reel to boot. I can also use it for crappie w/o a problem. I love the handle personaly. Everyone has their opinions but I think the graphite problem might be overrated ( just MY opinion). Muddy even did some tests trying to get the graphite to twist and couldn't get it to do it. I believe LBH, Dodgeguy, Muddy, Fivebass and several others own Presidents and rate them highly.

I also own a Shimano Symetre and it is a fine real also smooth but on the surface not worth the extra $20 in my opinion. Longevity could make the $20 difference so only time will tell. The weight might come into play for the $20 also for some people but for me it is not an issue. In fact my 6730 weighs  4% less that the 2500 Symetre

I just received ( fri) a Pflueger Medalist but have not had a chance to fish with it yet. It is also a sweet reel but again on the surface not noticeably worth the extra $20 but how long it lasts might be the deciding factor although my president is a year old and no problems whatsoever.

None of this means I am right. These are just my observations / opinions.  It could be my overall lack of experience although I do fish 2 - 3 days a week so I should have enough water time to offer a fair opinion.
