mpharris1989 Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 has anybody done it or do it? because i'm curious about trying Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted December 20, 2007 Super User Posted December 20, 2007 Lots of fun although I have not flyfished in many years. Don't get me started either. The last thing I need to do is start buying fly gear. Oh Lord, more rods. Quote
32251 Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 I can't even imagine how exciting it would be to latch on to a 7 or 8 pounder with just a fly rod and your bare hand on the line!! Quote
Super User Sam Posted December 20, 2007 Super User Posted December 20, 2007 Yes, did it when growing up in south Louisiana. Lots of fun, even when I tried to cast the fly to the other shore at a lagoon and I fell in. My cousin, who was down the shore about 25 yards fell on the ground in hysteric laughter. If I recall, we had all types of flys all over the place. Plus the fact that it was expensive to fly fish. We caught one bass for every 10 bluegills. But you can fly fish for bass and do well. Check out Orvis' web site for gear and pricing. Quote
Popeye Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 Absolutely you can fly fish for bass and any other species of fish that you care to, including the toothy critters that EAT bass! There are many folks that do just that and I'm gonna be one of them as soon as I retire!! I have spent a small fortune to supplement my new BC and spinning gear with 2 fly rods and reels and am now going to learn how to tie bass flys/poppers for myself. There are numerous bass bugs/flys that you can buy already made and ready for use. I'd recommend that you go with at least a 6 wt fly rod and a 7 or 8 wt would probably be better (I bought a 6 wt and a 7 wt after discussing the issue with a friend at work who fly fishes saltwater here in San Diego, and believe me, if you can fly fish for saltwater fish which I have found to be MUCH larger than the normal bass or pike, you can fly fish for anything! - he recommended the 6/7 wt rods and has fly fished for many years, both saltwater and freshwater - salmon get pretty darn big as well:o) You also need the heavier weight rods to cast the heavier weight fly line and BIG flys/bugs/poppers that bass are likely to eat/strike. I find it exhilerating when I catch any kind of fish on a topwater bait, so fly fishing is a natural. A LM or SM exploding upwards on a topwater is a thrill that is hard to duplicate! Just know that it will be moderately expensive to get into fly fishing. The rods and reels can be expensive but need not be if you search around (Ebay:o). The one thing that I have learned is to place more importance on the fly LINE than any other aspect of the gear! There are many great DVDs that are available for anyone wanting to start fly fishing for bass. I found several on Ebay as well. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 20, 2007 Super User Posted December 20, 2007 Well, have any of you guys actually caught big bass fly fishing? I have never known anyone that has any luck with better fish. I view fly fishing for bass as a small fish technique. Quote
farmpond1 Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 Well, have any of you guys actually caught big bass fly fishing? I have never known anyone that has any luck with better fish. I view fly fishing for bass as a small fish technique. (Most) "flies" are rather diminutive in size (at least in comparison to, say, a Zara Spook or a Devils Horse), so the chance of enticing a better bass is less. But I'm sure there are others that would disagree. I've never caught a really good bass on a fly but I'm fairly new to the sport. Regardless of the size fish, however, fly fishing is a lot of fun. Tucson Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 I've caught a fair number of bass on a flyrod, mostly smallies. I'm not exactly world class with a flyrod but when you do hook up.......pretty exciting. A real primal way to fish, bass on one end of the line and you're holding the other end of the line in your fingers. Gotta agree with barnettjc about the line - don't skimp on the line quality!! You can easily get by with an inexpensive reel, they don't matter all that much but GET A GOOD LINE! I've always used a 9' - 8wt rod but could go lighter. I'd like to try flyfishing for pike someday so the 8 weight will do both. I'ts a real satisfying way to fish but the learning curve is significant compared to spinning equipment. However, the challenge and satisfaction are greater. Quote
Fishin49er Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 I've landed about a 3lb smallie on a 6wt, not exactly a huge fish but definitely a good fight. Quote
Super User Raul Posted December 20, 2007 Super User Posted December 20, 2007 I do on ocassion, only trouble is ..... I catch more bluegills, tilapias and carp than bass with flies, 5 times as much. Actually my buddies ask me when I take my fly rod if I am going after something else instead of going after bass. Them bass fisherman from the south, they don 't get it, it 's not the destination but the ride what counts : ....... oooops ! I just stepped on my tongue. :-X Quote

Bean Counter Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 I've caught a 4 pounder on a 5 wt fly rod. It took about 15 minutes get it to the boat. With casting gear I would have just horsed it in. There is not anything more fun than catching bass on a fly when the topwater bite is on. Quote
Super User Alpster Posted December 20, 2007 Super User Posted December 20, 2007 I have caught a few 3+ lb bass on the fly. There is no reason you couldn't catch a big bass with fly tackle. There's a guy on VS TV that catches 500lb billfish on a flyrod. Ronnie Quote
Handy Posted December 21, 2007 Posted December 21, 2007 I too have caught a few largemouths flyfishing. Small to most but where I live good sized and nice eaters. Catch allot of bluegill too but that doesn't bother me, that's just part of fishing. I really enjoy it but don't get to do it allot, I don't cast well enough to fight the wind so I only do it on calmish days. I also flyfish for creekchubs, then I go catfishing. I have even caught minnows on a teeny tiny fly. I still laugh at that one. I say its fun. Go for it. Paul Quote
armesjr Posted December 21, 2007 Posted December 21, 2007 I got a flyrod over the summer, but never got around to using it to much. Didnt want to waste good fishing time learning how to fly fish. Now that it is cold, though i am putting in some good practice time. Like Sam said, check out orvis, they have good stuff and a really good waranty on their products. Quote
mpharris1989 Posted December 21, 2007 Author Posted December 21, 2007 thanks guys, the reason i wanted to know was because back when i was in the boyscouts, one of my friends dad knew how to flyfish. Living in south Texas, nobody knew how besides him, so he taught us how and we caught a few dinks. So i went out after that and bought a really cheap fly fishing starter set at walmart for about $20, and since then havnt gotten around to using it. .....so maybe now i'll give it a try Quote
kms399 Posted December 21, 2007 Posted December 21, 2007 I have a buddy who is really into flyfishing he shows me pictures of huge pike and even a couple muskies all caught on a flyrod. he does some bass but prefers pike Quote
vicdotcom Posted December 21, 2007 Posted December 21, 2007 Here is the biggest largemouth I have caught so far on my flyrod lol I do catch a lot of panfish on it though. Its a lot of fun especially with an ultralight rod. Vic Quote
