Depends on the price point. I'm a Shimano guy, and the Citica at $119 is great. Curado at $199 is better, and the Chronarch 50 MG for $249 is super sweet.

Any of these three would do great for you.

My "go-to" reel is the Curado 100D. I own about ten of them, and they are workhorses.

Curado for $160 is by far the best bang for your buck.

It's a tie for me,  Alphas Ito 103 AI or the Steez 103H.  If I were a Shimano guy it would probably be the Calias DC.  Smooth as silk!  If I were a Abu guy, it would be the Abu Morrum AE 74.

you said your cardiff didn't cast far.  i have a cardiff.  it casts very well and i love it.  just a silly question here.  do you have the cast control and the braking system set up properly for the lures you are using?  if not, it won't cost you anything to change that and have a great reel that works just fine.  the best and most expensive reels in the world won't cast worth a crap if they are not adjusted properly. ;)

Old style Curado, new style Curado, Curado. I'm sure you get the point.

Your rod does the casting not your reel; if you're having problems with the reel it's because it's set up wrong. I own 2 Cardiff's and they will cast just as far as any reel out there.

Anything with Shimano on it.

And to double up on what Catt said, it is your rod that controls your distance.

The baitcaster has to be set up correctly for each bait but overall, it is your rod that determines your casting distance.

As usualy, Catt is right again.

I've owned Shimano's and Daiwas.  For me there is no question that the best reel money can buy are the Daiwa Steez 100ha, the Alphas Ito reel, and the Daiwa Zillion HLC which is only available in Japan.  Calling them reels doesnt seem right, they are more like precision fishing isntruments.

i used to own nothing but quantum until i got the deal of a lifetime that included 5 curados, a chronarch 50mg and a diawa sol. i love the shimanos, but the sol is such a smooth reel. i love them all. i guess it is like asking do you like blondes or brunettes---ford or chevy--it is all personal preference.

What Is The Best Baitcaster reel?

None, all.

It has nothing to do with personal pereference, it has to do with the overall design and the performance of the reel, some reels do better certain things than others and there 's nothing you can do about it other than use the appropiate tool for the job. All reels have limitations, if it 's not the drag, it 's the weight of the spool, it 's the braking system, it 's the gearing, it 's the spool design, it 's the bearings or in the ultimate case, it 's you the limitation.

You want a reel for casting what ?

what lure weight ?

what lure profile ?

what line ?

what you expect of the reel or you want the reel to do ?

I have a small Shimano collection and I like them all. Still missing a Core, but that will change soon. The king is the Calais, but some may find it heavy. I cannot really comment on the Core from personal experience, but Raul has stated that it is worth the extra $100 versus the Chronarch. However, I think anyone would find the 50 MG a pleasure to fish and a lot of guys think it is the best reel in the Shimano line-up.

The Core is just plain sexy with a macho element to it, Dartanium drag, HEG gearing, silky smooth and a great caster. If you ask me compared to other reels it 's in the same level of excellence of the old TDZ having better looks and some features ( like the spool ) that make it one heck of a reel.

I had a Calais 100A, sold it after only using it a couple of times to get me a TDZ ( my only beef was the weight ), you 'll find the same level of excellence in the Core that the one you have in the Calais but a lot lighter.

Not only got spoiled with Japanese stuff, also got spoiled with the weight of Mg reels.

Never fished with a sub 6.5 oz reel ? you don 't know what you are missing.  ;)

I share the same sentiments.

I too have a cardiff and it handles just like my curados in terms of castibility, despite it not having the superfree. I can pitch and cast with ease. Perhaps your cast control setting is too tight? Even 1/4 oz lures are no problem with a cardiff.  Good luck
