I would buy something else!! Sure they dont break they have no back bone you need some backbone to get a good hook set! I dont think they are sensitive at all.

i dont like mine.

tough has hell....i abuse it very much...but it lacks backbone (amount of stiffness...need it to set the hook good) and it also lacks very much in sensitivity. that whole clear tip design is phoney, it doesnt add anything for sensativity. not a good rod to buy.

if youre looking for a rod in that pricerange, go with the berkley lightnin rod. alot more backbone, and a noticible amount of sensativity (i like my lightnin rod)

Great rental rods, though  ;)

Not a good rod for bass fishing, IMHO.  I have owned two over the years and never cared for them.  They are OK for catfish, carp and maybe a float setup.  I would look at BPS's rods at that same price point.

They are ok for trolling, you don 't have to worry about the rod breaking when you hang up.

How much are you looking to spend. There are a lot of choices out there and a lot of guys who can help you, who have fished them all.

If you are just fishing for fun dont want to spend a ton of equipment I would go with one, but you do find a huge difference between an ugly stick and say an avid. Rods you really really get what you pay for.

I have seen many posts here on the site about Ugly Stiks, I have even posted a few of them. Don't get me wrong, Ugly Stiks have a place in fishing, they are a great rod for someone who is new to fishing. I used them to fish for bass, stocked trout, stocked slamon, and stripers. I have caught 2, 3, and 4 # pond bass with a L power Ugly and 6# test. This was within the past couple years. Since regularly posting and browsing this site, I have learned a lot about different rods, and their uses in bass fishing, and the Ugly Stik really doesn't have a place here. If you own an ugly stik, and can;t or don;t want to afford a new rod right now, then by all means use it. But I would go for a $40 rod, 6'6" spinning rod made of IM 6 graphite from Wal-Mart or another sporting good store. This will be a good rod for bass fishign that will allow you to fish plastics lighter jigs 1/4-3/0 oz., lighter spinnerbaits, and buzzbaits. I would then buy an Ugly Stik Lite, which have more graphite in them than the origianly US. This makes them more sensitive. These Lites still have a moderate/Slow action which means they bend a lot. These aren;t good at all for fishing plastics, or jigs, where you really need to set the hook. But they are decent rods for things like crankbaits, topwaters, and jerkbaits because the bend in the rod gives alot more which doesn;t tear the small trebles out of the fishes mouth.

But, if you can only get one rod, go for a M power spinning combo to start out with. Buy some spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, a couple jigs, and some soft plastics and you'll be able to catch bass just about everywhere in the lake/pond.

I used to use these rods all the time growing up. They are a good rod for $30 and are very durable. I once caught a 18LB carp, and a 6 LB bass with ugly stick rods. For someone who doesent have much money or is just getting into fishing they are good rods. However if you are serious about fishing I would not buy one. They are not sensitive. I still have one of my ugly sticks and I like it for carp and catfish fishing. The main problem with this rod is that it has the sensitivity of a broom stick so it is a horrible choice for fishing plastics. They do work ok for hard baits such as cranks and jerk baits.

If you do not want to spend a lot on a rod I would reccomend the Berkly lightnin rod. It is also a rod that is around $35 and it is a lot more sensitive than the ugly stick rod. I realy like the lightnin rod since it is cheap and is a decent all round rod. Also you dont have to worry about the insides of the eyes comeing off which happened to a couple of my ugly stick rods I had as a kid.
