radman Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 What do you think about this rod for fishing small jigs, texas rigs. Quote
Super User Tin Posted December 7, 2007 Super User Posted December 7, 2007 Moderate tip= Treble hook baits Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted December 7, 2007 Super User Posted December 7, 2007 Personaly I would not care for that rod for plastics or jigs, IMHO it would be a better crankbait and/or spinerbait rod. Also IMHO the MH power would be a poor choice for "small plastics and jigs" . A M power/fast action rod would be better. I don't switch to a MH power untill I get above 1/4oz, but then again 1/4 or 3/8 oz may be what you mean by "small" I guess you need to clarify that. Quote
RobbyZ5001 Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 I like med fast for texas and small jigs. Quote
radman Posted December 7, 2007 Author Posted December 7, 2007 I have a 7ft med/hvy fast tip, I was wanting to know if there was a better rod for 1/4 or 5/16 oz jigs. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted December 7, 2007 Super User Posted December 7, 2007 That 1/4 to 5/16 oz range is just about where I switch to MH power, but I do through those sizes on M power rods as well. Depends on condtions. If I am pitching a 1/4 oz t-rigged platic or jig into a laydown or hole in a weed bed then I use the MH power rod, if I am working the same bait in open water I go with M power. BUT I use fast action for both. Moderate action, like others have said, is not the best choice for a good solid hookset, but if thats what you want try it, you might like it, I just know I would not. Super User roadwarrior Posted December 7, 2007 Super User Posted December 7, 2007 I have a 7ft med/hvy fast tip, I was wanting to know if there was a better rod for 1/4 or 5/16 oz jigs. Regardless of the "rating", Fast Action rods have different degrees of "firmness". I recently purchased the St. Croix Legend Elite EC70MHF. Although the tip is "firm" it is not as stiff as my G.Loomis GLX MBR844C. So, my only point is that it is hard to answer specifically, but as a general rule I like a VERY firm tip for fishing jigs. My LE is okay, but I like the stiff tip of my Heavy Power/ Fast Action MBR better. (I bought the St. Croix as my spinnerbait/ small swimbait rod). Quote
dbass Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 RW, I am probably wrong here but isn't that MBR844C nothing more than a MagBassRod 7' HF casting. I was always under the assumption that the last digit in the designation meant power rating. IE; 2=medium, 3=medium heavy, 4=heavy, 5=magheavy, etc. set me straight RW.... Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 7, 2007 Super User Posted December 7, 2007 The last digit is the "power rating". The MBR series does offer a "5", so the MBR844 is not the heaviest in this class: http://products.gloomis.com/gl/products/family.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302032505&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474395181201&bmUID=1197063189988 Quote
dbass Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 Clicking around on that page brings me some more questions.. MBR844C, Length: 7' Power: 4 Pieces: 1 Casting GL3 Matte Black 7' 12 - 20 1/4 - 1 Fast Heavy MBR845C Length: 7' Power: 5 Pieces: 1 Casting GL3 Matte Black 7' 12 - 25 3/8 - 1 1/4 Fast Heavy I recently purchased the St. Croix Legend Elite EC70MHF. Although the tip is "firm" is is not as stiff as my G.Loomis GLX MBR844CI guess the point i'm trying to make is, the EC70MHF is not going to be as stiff as the Loomis 4 or 5 power Heavy. It really confuses me when I see comparisons made like that. Super User roadwarrior Posted December 7, 2007 Super User Posted December 7, 2007 David, You are right, but I was expecting the St. Croix EC70MHF to have the same tip firmness as the MBR844C. I have a ES70MF which is my main soft plastics rod and the tip "seems" stiffer than the new rod. I am NOT disappointed in the EC70MHF because the rod characteristics fit the application I bought it for perfectly, I was just expecting a very firm tip. p.s. The EC70MHF has a lure rating of 3/8 oz - 1 oz which is another reason I thought the tips would be comparable. Quote
Super User Tin Posted December 7, 2007 Super User Posted December 7, 2007 I have owned both rods. The med/heavy with a fast action I used for jigs, spinnerbaits, and t-rigged plastics. The med/heavy with a moderate tip was my rat-l-trap rod. Quote
dbass Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 Yea I understand RW. But comparing the medium spinning blank to the medium heavy casting blank, i'm not positive but i'll bet the blank taper between the two is different, or the guide placement might have something to do with it. I can stated for sure, that I can take 2 of the exact same blanks and measure them, and find they are not identical. In the custom building world, we never expect 2 of the same blanks from the same manufacturer to be identical. That's why we have to spline each, and, static test each one for guide placement. Just some thoughts.. Tight Lines All!!! Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 8, 2007 Super User Posted December 8, 2007 David, I'm sure you are right. It's an interesting discussion to deal with the minute details that make a difference to us. Quote
