I need help figuring what shimano reel I need. I am a little embarassed to admit that I can not figure out what the letters in their reel identification codes mean. I think the 100 series is smaller and holds less line than the 200 series??? is this correct? Then, for the citica, they have a CI100DSV, CI200D, CI200DSV, CI200DPV...which has a different gear ratio. what does the DSV, D, DPV etc mean??? I am trying to tell Santa what I want, but I need to know what these letters and numbers designate. Thanks for your help.

the 100's ar smaller and holds 10yds less line. they are good if you have smaller hands and like light reels (i have a 200 and its big and heavy). the 200D is just the standard of the series...great all around...has all the best features.the 201 is just a leftie version. the 200DSV D series, S salt, V version. DSV is a saltwater vesion(no holes in the spool). 200DPV D series, P power V version. lower gear ratio for more power.

hope that helped.

(ps. citicas are great reels...i have a 200d and love it, and just got a 100dsv but cant have it till xmas. you'll be happy w/ whatever you get)

Thanks dsaavedra. That helps alot. I think I will start with the 200D if santa agrees. Do you know if both the 100 series and the 200 series have the H.E.G. (high efficiency gearing)??? I would probably do better with the 100, but on shimano website, it shows the 100 not having this. Thanks for the help you have already given.

HEG's are only found in the 200 series.

But you answered your own question...

it shows the 100 not having this.

Thanks Reelmechanic. Being somewhat of a newbie, is the high efficiency gearing something that I really need???? I fish mostly on weekends in public lakes here in Ohio. I have caught a couple nice fish, guessing they weighed about 3-4 lbs, but no real monsters. Thanks for your input.

The HEG IMO was the brain child of the company, to help these reels in the salt water arena. The 200 DSV, and DPV, would all need the heaver quality cut gears, because of the main & pinion gear sizes, more so than the freshwater 100's and standard 100 & 200 D's.

Short answer, you are not throwing big baits, nor are you trolling big baits, NO!

From the Shimano® website..

High Effeciency Gearing (HEG)

HEG consists of not only the gears, but also the frame, setplate, and handle-side sideplate. First we increased the size of the drive gear and the pinion gear to offer increased leverage and power. By using a one-piece frame that incorporates the setplate and adding a one-piece stamped sideplate, we have eliminated flex in the drivetrain that causes normal gears to bind under pressure. By eliminating the flex and increasing the leverage, we are able to provide high-speed retrieves and deliver an incredible amount of torque, while maintaining the smooth, silent retrieve Shimano reels are famous for.

Thanks for your input, reelmechanic. I believe my wife purchased the citica/extreme combo from basspro shops. I am not sure what reel she ordered but will be happy to add another rod & reel to my arsenal.

Did she buy it on or after 12-01-07? If so, go to their website and download the rebate form.  I believe it is either a $30 or $20 rebate for the purchase of a Citica and $50 for a curado.  Then, take that $$$ and get a little something for the Mrs.  :)
