jtptr196 Posted November 27, 2007 Posted November 27, 2007 I am thinking of buying a kistler magnesium series mgswmh70 anyone know anything about these rods? Quote
Super User Tin Posted November 27, 2007 Super User Posted November 27, 2007 You won't regret it!!! Amazing rods, was able to use a buddies for a while, never had an issue or heard a bad thing about them from my buddies who own them. Quote
mayassa Posted November 27, 2007 Posted November 27, 2007 It has pretty good reviews http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp;jsessionid=QZWHXRD2PRFAHLAQBBJSCOVMCAEFIIWE?id=0036611120912a&type=product&cmCat=froogle&cm_ven=data_feed&cm_cat=froogle&cm_pla=0280102&cm_ite=0036611120912a&_requestid=69878 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted November 27, 2007 Super User Posted November 27, 2007 ...never had an issue or heard a bad thing about them. Huh? Take THE reel you plan to use to the retailer and MAKE SURE it fits perfectly. If you order online, you will need to CAREFULLY examine the match-up with the reel. This has been a problem for some. I don't know anything about "Smart Touch" reel seats, but I thought Dan said Kistler was updating with Fuji on their new production models? Are stainless steel guides a good thing? Well, at least you get the magic hook hanger! Quote
TournyFish001 Posted November 27, 2007 Posted November 27, 2007 I love mine great rod- it rivals rods costing twice as much- very light and sensitive. Quote
hollandbass Posted November 27, 2007 Posted November 27, 2007 $50 rod with a $170 price tag, a bunch of hype IMO. Cheap components, sloppy finish, so-so warranty. Ive had them all, go Loomis or Croix. Quote

Super User ww2farmer Posted November 28, 2007 Super User Posted November 28, 2007 jtptr196.........I few weeks ago I was also leaning very VERY close to buying a Kistler, the Jig-N-Toad rod from the Magnesium TS series. I was very impressed with the rod. I have never spent that much on a rod before so I asked here about them first. I got many responses, including advice on taking my reel to the shop and mount it first to see how it fit and balanced. So I did just that. I took my reel (Abu Garcia Revo S) to check the fit/feel. I was quite dissapointed. All 3 Mag TS Jig-N-Toads in stock had sloppy fitting reel seats. Now the Heluim LTA's I tried the reel on all had good fitting seats, but they were not in my plans. The Mag TS may be a great series of rods, but my $70 St Croix Triumphs, and $90 Fenwick HMX's all have tight fitting reel seats, for $170 I would have though that would be a non issue. I may still upgrade my rods in the future, but I am a little turned off by Kistler right now. Quote
flippin4it. Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 I had the Mag TS All Day Flippin stick (lost it in a boating accident). Loved that rod, balanced and sensitive. Great hook setting power. Had no problems or complaints. Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted November 28, 2007 Super User Posted November 28, 2007 I have a Mg MH 69APC that I really like for spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. Also does well with t-rigs. To be fair, I did have a realseat problem when I tried a Pflueger reel on there, but no issues with a Curado or Revo STX. Quote
Trevor in Burke Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 I had the Mag TS All Day Flippin stick (lost it in a boating accident). Loved that rod, balanced and sensitive. Great hook setting power. Had no problems or complaints. what happened? Quote

Id imagine the reel moved in the seat- mine did it to- all I did was put a 1/2" piece of e-tape on the reel and it is now perfect. Some reels are a bit loose in the seat- Quote

AnthonyRSS Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 I've had two LTAs with the Batson reelseats and 1 with the new ACS Fuji and they all work well. Had a Mg that was also fine. I have used a half dozen or so Batson reel seats on my rod builds and haven't had any problems with them either. I have had a few St. Croix Avids with loose seats though. I don't think the Kistlers are worth the money, but they do have excellent customer service. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted November 29, 2007 Super User Posted November 29, 2007 I have had a few St. Croix Avids with loose seats though. I have NEVER seen this complaint, but if that were EVER the case, the rods will be replaced at NO CHARGE. Quote

And when going for a new rod, that is one of the big things I go for, besides weight and sensitivity. As for St. Croix replacing your reel seats :-/, it all depends who you talk to with their Customer Service or who gets the rod when it arrives at the factory. Key word in their and most other rod companies warranty programs are LIMITED. Quote
WCCT Posted November 29, 2007 Posted November 29, 2007 I have the Magnesium Crankbait rod. Model MgCBGGM70. It is probably the best crankbait rod I have owned. I have owned G-Loomis, St. Croix and Team Daiwa crankin sticks, and I liked them all except the Team Daiwa, but I like the Kistler better. Quote
blade Posted November 29, 2007 Posted November 29, 2007 It seems like everytime someone brings up kistler rods, it steps on peoples toes. I think it funny that people that have never owned a kistler (roadwarrior) always have to put there two cents in. Sure croix make a good rod but no better than kistlers. ANd they WILL NOT come close to the customer service as kistler. You will not be dissappointed with a kistler and if you are for some reason you sould have no trouble selling it. Quote
basspro48 Posted November 29, 2007 Posted November 29, 2007 I only own one Kistler rod but I tell you what that thing is a workhorse. It is a 7' MH Graphite Plus, it's as sensitive as any other rod in or above that price range, it can winch 6+lb fish out of some nasty cover with no problem, and basically it's just a joy to fish with. Now I've never heard of or seen a Kistler with a faulty or sloppy reel seat, I have a Shimano Curado 100B mounted on mine and haven't noticed any problems, and I have handled MG's and LTA's and never noticed a loose fitting reel seat. I can't really say anything about their warranty because I have never had a problem with the rod and hopefully I never will. Kistler makes a good rod for a reasonable price IMO and I will never hesitate to buy another in the future. Quote
AnthonyRSS Posted November 29, 2007 Posted November 29, 2007 I bet if you did happen to have a Kistler with a loose reel seat, they would make it right. I'm still not particularly fond of their rods though. I can build my own better for less. Anthony Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted November 29, 2007 Super User Posted November 29, 2007 It seems like everytime someone brings up kistler rods, it steps on peoples toes. I think it funny that people that have never owned a kistler (roadwarrior) always have to put there two cents in. Posts from fishermen on this and other Forums. As a specific example, Raul has two Kistler rods with reel seats that DO NOT match up with most of his (high end) reels. As it turns out this is a CHRONIC problem that Kistler is aware of. I'm told they are now using Fuji reel seats, but knowing the problem they still shipped the older (defective) models. Knowing you have a problem and continuing to pass them on to unsuspecting retail customers is unethical. p.s. Although I am a BIG fan of St. Croix rods, I have consistantly criticized the introduction of the Triumph (which I have never owned). This line of rods, at least initially, was distributed without adequate quality control in place. Some fishermen (The_Muddy_Man) have purchased rods without problems and highly recommend them at their pricing point. The FACT that MANY of the Triumphs were shoddy reflects poorly on St. Croix's otherwise fine reputation. I consider it an embarassment for the company that this line of equipment bears their name. Super User flechero Posted November 29, 2007 Super User Posted November 29, 2007 ANd they WILL NOT come close to the customer service as kistler. More than one member here has been instructed, by kistler customer service, to use TAPE to build up a reel foot to fit a loose reel seat. Yup, they are nothing but solution oriented!! ;D ;D Anyone see the new kistler Christmas sale ad? Buy any kistler rod and recieve 2 free rolls of electrical tape with a mail in coupon to 3M. ;D ;D ;D ;D Quote
