Bassnajr Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 Hey all... Bass fishing here in the Northeast is pretty much done for the year. I'm now looking to the spring and one thing I'd like to get going on is a rod and reel set up for use with jigs, crankbaits, and heavy spinner baits. I just purchased a Penn Captiva CV 4000 with a 6.2-1 ratio, 11BB and 200yds/10lb. I am looking for a rod to match. Will this be a good reel for what I intend to use it for?? What rod would be a good match??? Any other ideas?? Thanks in advance!!! bassinajr Quote
Super User Tin Posted December 2, 2007 Super User Posted December 2, 2007 Wouldn't throw cranks on the same rod as a jig/spinnerbait. I would recommend a Kistler or Loomis. For RI we dont do any deep cranking so a 6'6" Medium action with a moderate tip and the jigs/spinnerbaits, a 6'8"-7' MH action. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 2, 2007 Super User Posted December 2, 2007 Jigs and soft plastics require a firm tip. Crankbaits (all treble hooks) should be fished on a rod with a soft tip. http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1141187546 Quote
Super User Tin Posted December 2, 2007 Super User Posted December 2, 2007 Great explanation RW. Quote
=Matt 5.0= Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 Most of the time I actually use a 6'6" Ugly Stick lite for crankbaits....really can't get much softer than that. I also have used my 7' M BPS Extreme, works well also. Tin and I both looked at a Loomis crankbait rod at BPS and were suprised at how stiff the tip was.... Quote
Super User Tin Posted December 2, 2007 Super User Posted December 2, 2007 Ya, I think they messed up on blanks, a bad shipment or something. The loomis spinnerbait rod was like a cb rod and the cb rod was probably the spinnerbait rod. I think a 1/2 oz. spinnerbait on the spinnerbait rod and it would have been 2/3's over. Quote

I know that I am not comfortable using a MH for jigs over 13/8 oz or spinnerbaits over 3/8 oz. I'd be looking at a M for cranks, a MH for jigs and spinnerbaits up to 3/8, then a H for larger jigs and spinnerbaits. Quote
Super User Micro Posted December 2, 2007 Super User Posted December 2, 2007 Looks like someone stayed logged in to the website, or someone got his account hacked. I doubt that was actually Bass109. Quote
