Reel Mechanic will be along shortly to give you the professional's view.

Here's the quick version; grease on the gears, oil for everything else. And a little goes along way. Don't overdo it.

I have several PT's, and every one of them had way too much grease applied.

One more tip. Don't mess with the IAR bearing. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I have two nice reels in my collection that I bought really cheap from a guy who overlubed the IAR bearing to the point it quit working. He thought the reels were trashed. They weren't.

If you haven't purchased any hot sauce yet, give some consideration to Reel Butter oil and grease. I switched over this year, and all of my reels are noticeably smoother. The down side is you'll have to do a complete tear down to be able to clean out all the hot sauce. Not a bad idea to do that once a year anyway.

Cheers,

GK

Loomis, I like Reel Butter oil and grease. You can order both from BPS.

I've only started using it this late season, so I can't tell you if it lasts as well as some of the others. The oil is very low viscosity, so I'm guessing that the spool bearings will need to be cleaned and relubed every few weeks. That's something I do anyway. The grease is very sticky, and I'd say that from the looks of it, it will last for at least a year. By the end of next year I'll have a better idea.

Cheers,

OK here goes. For the last 30 years I have been using Marvel Mystery oil. It is now known as Marvel Lubricating oil. Just a drop. It can be purchased at most auto supply stores. I have a 4oz. bottle that is over 5 years old. I have never replaced a bearing, and I give em all hell. More gears, pals, and springs than I can count. I am aware that it is a penetrating oil but I will not use anything else. I have tried so many different kinds I lost track early on. I know I get a lot more distance with it than anything I ever used before. I need to add that I bench my reels at least every six months whether they need it or not and I buy very few replacement parts other than the normal wear and tear. The gears...I use MPC PL-10 Power Lift (assembly & all purpose grease). The only draw back is the 6mo. benching, but I really don't mind as you can head off trouble in advance. Never lost a set of gears either(Other than wearing them out). And that's not often. Two things I will not do...Dip a reel in water or spray it with a water hose. Big mistake!!!P.S. Reelmechanic has probably bumped his head from falling off his stool and will shortly chastize me for ruining good reels but it works for me. One last thing. Everyone that is using Reel Majic ...It's for fishing line not reels. Stop it!!!

Many people like Hotsause......I don't.

I use lithium grease ( Shimano ) and Shimano oil for every thing but spool support bearing. For them Yellow TG Rocket Fuel.
