I stopped in Gander Mt today and found a bunch of spools of Trilene sensation selling for $1.00 per 330yrd spool.  The only thing the box says in reference to what type of line it is, is that it is a "complex polymer alloy".

What is that?

Is that just a fancy way of saying the line is a co-polymer?

And also please refresh my memory, what is a co-polymer?  Isn't a co-polymer a mono line coated with flourocarbon?

Please HELP!!!!

Well, Berkley makes several terrible lines, but I think (original) Sensation was sooooooooo bad it was discontinued. You shouldn't use the original formula even if they PAY YOU $5.00 for 330 yards! I guess I don't really know anything about the "NEW", but I don't fish the "reformulated" Vanish either.

To answer your other question, a copolymer fishing line is simply a combination of monofilament fibers. "co" is more than one. If you are interested in a scientific explanation:

What are some of the negatives that make it a bad line?

I agree with you about Trilene.  Most of there lines are horrible!

To add what RW said about Berkely making several terrible lines. I purchased VANISH fluoro around the time it came out and all the pros were talking about it. I lost more fish in a few outings using that stinkin' line than I have in my ten years of fishing. I started using Triline when I was a youngster because BASS would send me free spools for signing up to their magizine.

That's just a little stap I had to take at Berekly ofr losing a couple fish.

Dont waste your dollar.  Also, ever think of why it would cost only $1? Spend the extra $$$ and go with a better line. Sure it is cheap, but is it worth loosing fish over?-My experience anyway.

A few years back I tried the "Sensation" line by Trilene and didn't like it much. It was useable, but was too stiff in the lighter line weights. But I got to tell you all...I get a real kick out of all the negativism here being bandied about concerning Vanish fluoro. I've said it before and I'll keep saying it - I've been using it for years with no problems whatsoever. I have 4 spin rigs filled with it from 4# to 14#. I'll match all the fish I catch with anybody using any other fluorocarbon line. Vanish is not better, but it's certainly not as bad as some folks make it out to be.  Maybe it's bad because it doesn't carry the high price tag?  :o

I've used several Berkley lines over the years and didn't have any particular problems. The lines that come to mind are XL, Ultra-Thin, Tri-Max and Sensation. I still have XL and Sensation on some reels.

No.

It's because some of us had TERRIBLE experience with the original formula Vanish.

Well I don't know when they changed the formula on Sensation, but I have been using it for 3 years now and have loved it. Lower stretch, low visabilty, smaller diameter compaired to mono equivalent, extreamly managable on spinning tackle, and very abrasion resistant, infact I used 8lb Sensation to drag tube jugs in Zebra mussle infested waters this year and it held up quite well, and Zebra mussles WILL tear your line to shreads. It's almost my idea of a perfect GP line.

I don't know what "version" of Sensation is on sale where you are, but if it's new 2007 made line, it's well worth the price.

I don't agree with RW on much, but I do agree with him in that the early versions of Vanish were total JUNK. I guess they have changed that as well, and actually I have a few freinds who fish it alot and swear by it. One guy is a very accomplished TX angler as well, so maybe I might try it agian.........but like most products, fail me once, and it's hard to trust it again.

I used to use nothing but Sensation until last year, where we got nothing but bad spool after bad spool. Last year really soured me on Berkley line, so this year I tried InvisX and Original Stren. I've gotta say that for a cheap line, Stren is pretty good.

By the way, they're probably selling that line ultra cheap because they don't want it sitting around all winter long, or its old as dirt.

Sensation was, at least at one time, Berkley's biggest seller - even over XL. So some people liked it.

I haven't found a fluoro or co-poly line yet that I really like. And I only use braid on a couple of rods. Otherwise, I stick to plain mono - Trilene XL and Stren Original. It's cheap, good line, and allows me to respool more frequently.

I have had bad experiences with the Vanish as well.  I doubt it was the old formula though.  Earlier this year in preperation for a tournament up in Erie, I went out and bought 8lb and 10lb Vanish.  I also spooled a few reels with some Yozuri hybrid 8 and 10lb test.  I broke more fish off on the vanish than I caught.  The Yozuri was fragile too, but not nearly as bad as the Vanish.  Who knows though, the Vanish could have been old line when I bought it.  The 10lb vanish seemed to hold up much better than the 8lb, but they both were still very delicate.

Just as a side note, I am a huge bargin hunter, old line or not.  I bought 13 spools ranging from 10lb up to 20lb sensation.  I'll have to test it out myself and see if I like it.  I got over $100 worth of line for a mere $13.00!!  You just can't beat that!

Thanks for all the imput.

I used Sensation for a while and liked it when it was new, but when it had been on the reel for a while it started to kink pretty bad. I can't afford to change my line every month so I switched to Suffix and have used that ever since.

I agree that Vanish is terrible, or at least was when I used it.

Vanish and Sensation have to be two of the worst lines I have ever used.  I had used XT and XL for years and never had an issue.  These two lines had some many issues that it scared me away from Berkley all together for quite some time.  It was not until this year that I tried their new Trilene Flourocarbon and my faith was a little bit restored.  Another year of testing this stuff and it might become my favorite new line.

Stren ain't so cheap anymore since they kept the same price but reduced the package size from 330 to 175 yards. But I've always liked the line.

That's a Bass Pro Shop gimmick!!! I brought that up a few weeks ago but no one noticed. At BPS stores small spools of Stren original are 175 yards and the big spools are 550 yards (versus 330 and 1,000 everywhere else). And they are only a dollar or so cheaper than the bigger spools anywhere else.

You can still get Stren in the 330 and 1,000 yard spools. I refuse to buy Stren at BPS because it's too damned expensive for what you get.
