Headlamps are indispensible for night fishing.  I would highly recommend getting a quality one if you'll be doing a lot of night fishing.  I bought a 15 dollar one at Dicks and it crapped out.  May have been defective, but the batteries (3 AAAs) lasted all of an hour, and the thing heated up pretty badly.  I bought one for 40 bucks and the thing is amazing.  In 5 outings the batteries are still running strong, it has red and led lights, as well as a fade between the two, and it has a lever for adjusting the intensity of the light.  This thing will last a long time.

The red light is helpful when it's dark and you don't need too much light.  It doesn't take your eyes any time to adjust back to the darkness after using the red light, but after using the white light, your eyes have to adjust back to the darnkess.

I just realized that I got a deal at Dicks - it's $20 cheaper than at Cabelas!  I never would have thought that...

The color red and green are used because they don't dilate your eyes so you can still see at in the darkness.  Those colors are used so you can see enough, but not as much as a white light.  Kind of like if your inside in a well light area then go outside in the dark it takes you a moment to adjust to the darkness.  Red & green lights are to give you enough light to see without effecting your night vision.  A red and green light won't attrach bug either.  For a light on your hat, go with the white light.  I haven't seen a red or green light bright enough for hats to really get them.

I actually have the seasense red/white combo light in my boat, and how my boat layout is, that's all I need.  It uses 1/10 the power, and I've gone out at night from 7pm-3am and I still had about 50% battery left.  Using that kind of light the red and white does make a difference.  The white is bright and I can see very well, but I can't see much passed the light because of the brightness.  The red light is still bright (not as bright as the white) but gives me enough light to see in the boat to move around, unhook fish, change lures, and I can still see what's around the boat (shore, trees, etc...), and it doesn't attrach bugs.  That is the only red light that is bright enough, most aren't.  If you think about getting it, a guy at Bass Pro took one out of the package and hooked it up to one of the batteries to show me how bright it was.  It was only about $20 and it is simple to hook up.  Pick a place to put it and hook the Black to a neg, and the Red to a pos. wire.

I use the $15 Energizer head lamp I bought at walmart. Its a fairly simple light that has two white LEDs and one red LED. I hardly ever use the white as I hate bugs in my face and it really jacks up your night vision....mostly I can't stand the bugs. The red led provides plently of light for working tackle and thats all I really need. It runs on three included AAA's and their still holding well after several outtings.

I tried the hat light thing....didn't like all the weight hanging off the front of my hat. That and I'm not a hat person anyway.

ive got one from walmart by brinkman. i love that thingl its got very bright white lites, then an red one in the middle. the red one is so it protects your nightvision. (turn that white one on in the dark and you wount be able to see well for like 30 min afterwards) also red doesnt bring bugs to you.

Gotta have that red light.  The skeeters will make you pay if you don't.

I've got 2 headlamps.  An LLBean one my wife bought me as a gift, and a ray o vac

both are good, strong lights.

I keep one in the boat, and one in the glove compartment of the truck.  I figure you gotta have a light in the truck and a headlamp is better than a flashlight cause if you have to do some fixin' you have both hands free.

Plus my girlfriend likes it better that way too.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooppppppppppppppppppppppppsssssssssssss

That is a decent light and the one I finally settled on after trying many different models this summer.

It isn't quite bright enough for my liking, but the battery life is good and the light is good enough for close up work.

I also bought an Optronics UV led with secondary halogen bulbs.  While the UV lights are quite good, the halogen light will drain 3 AAA's in less than a night of rare usage.

I've tried green and red LED's, IMO they're pretty much useless.  If I'm using a lamp with either, I'll keep it on the red when I'm fishing just to have a little light.

A UV headlamp is indispensible when night fishing, no matter if you have blacklights on the boat or not.

I have the small Craftsman clip on led lights. They emit a soft blue light. Soft enough to keep your eyes fairly protected from dialation, yet offers plenty of light with all four bulbs on. I use all four to navigate and one or two for fishing needs. They don't exactly repel bugs, but I haven't noticed an increase in bug activity with them on.

Just bought one at walmart for 14 or 15 bucks. It's 6 LED's.  2 red, 2 white spot lights, and 2 white flood lights.  I've messed around with it at night in the house, and like everythign about it so far. I'm gonna use it for real this weekend.
