smcentee Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 This is my first year fishing a baitcaster. I've been using a Pflueger Supreme that is whisper quiet. I lucked up at an estate auction, and picked up a Daiwa Steez in what appeared to be hardly used condition; reel, box, oil, pouch, but no schematic. I fished the reel for about two hours, and immediately noticed a cheezy "whirring" noise, much more so than the sound of the Pflueger. I dropped some oil on the spool bearings, and it did nothing to quiet the reel. It still sounds cheezy. Is this indicative of Daiwa? Anyone else fishing a Steez experience this? Could the reel have a bad bearing? All thoughts or comments are welcome. Quote
Super User Raul Posted November 26, 2007 Super User Posted November 26, 2007 Is this indicative of Daiwa? It 's indicative of a magnesium frame reel, all Mg reels have different acoustics, specially bcs. Quote
Charger169 Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 My son had two of them. The first, quiet as could be. The second, whirring sound in the gear area. He got rid of it for something else but he was told that there is nothing wrong. Some gears mesh better than others. I have known of some Steez that sometimes do not engage the spool all the time after you turn the handle. Quote

A $500 reel ( new ones - not sure of your vintage Steez) that is noisy or the spool doesn't engage! Something wrong here, if I paid almost $500 I'd be ticked Don't own any Diawa but on the mid to upper price scales what I've read here on BassResource.com almost 100% positive on Diawa in general make that 98% or less as of these posts Quote
Charger169 Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 Why get ticked. He traided it away and got a Steez rod. The guy that got it took it to BPS and exchanged it. But I know of Shimanos, Quantums, and Daiwas that have this and other factory problems. If you don't like it just exchange it. Nothing to get ticked about. Quote

Glad it all worked out for him Charger IMO and only MO only A Steez or any $500 reel I would consider to be the "Ferraris" of reels. I would expect much higher quality of a "Ferrari" than a "Ford" or "Chevy" reel. If I splurged for the "Ferrari" I would be pretty ticked to know several of them had pretty substantial problems. IMPO I would have been leery of buying a Steez rod if their reel's quality is of this nature. From seeing Redlineroberts posts I don't think anyone is going to have big problems with the rod. For my money though I would have been inclined to go another direction but that's just me. Like I said glad it worked out. I guess I'm just a tough customer and look at things in a little different way. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted November 27, 2007 Super User Posted November 27, 2007 Ferrari's are quirky cars. Trust me My Steez reels (5 now, I think) do make some noise, but all work pretty flawlessly. You may want to ship it off to ReelMech, I'm sure he can diagnose the issue if there is one. Quote
