Looks pretty nice. The all star is a pretty good rod, I don't know about the reel though.

Sounds like a good deal to me and it is the perfect starting baitcasting combo.

I am a major Pflueger Fan , but that reel is a bust, I would not go near it. I use their Trion baitcasters and love them, the reel alone will set you back 99bucks.

If I can offer a suggestion, one I got from risk-kid and it paid off . My7 first set up to learn baitcasting was from Bass Pro Shops( BPS.COM) It was a BPS EXTREME COMBO

They are on slae for 99 bucks . I doubt there is a better bargin for a great start up kit. The reels are aluminum frame and well built and the rod is a higher quality than you will find at this pricing point. I just gave mine to a buddy who is using it to learn how to baitcast

If I may go on a bit of a tangent... :-/

I don't understand the whole 'beginner's combo' thing.  If you're going to learn, at least learn on a quality piece of equipment.

If that means spending $200, then so be it.   :-/

i have one valid reason. some beginners may get a casting setup and get quickly discouraged and give it up. then it would be a big waste of money to pay upwards of 200 dollars for a first timer. like when i first picked up a baitcaster, i was doin alright but i kept getting massive backlashes several times...so bad i couldnt use the reel anymore on the trip. so i just gave up on it for many months. (thankfully it was a combo that i had found at a pond and didnt pay big bucks for...someone left it for the next person cuz there was nobody else there and it was in bad shape when i came across it). anyway, then i got the incentive to pick it back up again and once i learned how to properly use it i really liked it and wanted a newer quality setup.

just my thoughts... ;)

I believe this also , and this combo is a very good combo for the price. Some of us have less to spend on stuff than others, but there are some good value deals iout there that can help a fella out.

yeah see i dont think a beginner needs top of the line stuff, but i dont think they need the lowest possible stuff either.

I suppose it is an okay deal. But I will tell you this.  You are better off as a newbie learning with a better reel.

Burley has a very good point.  Let's say you bought that deal.  A week later you realize that the reel is not that great (you will quickly outgrow it, when you realize it isn't going to handle 1/4 oz weights). So now you come back and ask us what would be a decent reel and we give you the recommendations from a Citica on up. That is another $130.00 or so.  You have now spent over $200.00.

You could have gotten a better rod and reel the first time around. It's a live a learn thing.  There is no reason a "beginner" has to start with lesser items. Bottom line, you will eventually end up spending more and the potential to learn more slowly.  Any bc reel in the Citica class on up will speed your learning curve. I guarantee it as one speaking from experience.

Haggle the price of $70-75 cash upfront. The rod is probably worth that and then get the reel of your choice.  You will then have a new excuse to get another rod.  ;D

Thanks for the advice guys.  $100 is about as high as I'm willing to spend right now.  I figure a $100 rig should get me by for a couple years or more.  I'll look in to that other suggested combo.   About the craigslist reel though... what is the problem with it?

That combo is from Dicks. I bought that identical combo when I was in Florida. I took it out once and returned it the next day. The rod is Shakespeare with All Star stickers, I know Shakespeare owns All Star and Phlueger. Anyways the reel is a piece of crap. You could do so much better then that. The reel looks trick and all but it really does suck. Those of you that have or had that reel and like it maybe I got a bad one but 140 is WAY to high for that. Good luck

That would be what i would recommend starting out...either that one or the shimano citica combo.I love my citica,i'm on a semi tight budget so a citica is a expensive reel for me.

I myself started on the bps extreme combo...still have it and use it.just not as much anymore.

First off why are you YELLING? Second it clearly states in the Craigslist ad the rod is an All Star Select.

Unfortunatley that is a Shakespeare rod with All Star stickers. I had the identical combo, purchased in Jax Florida. Call Dicks and ask them about the rod.

There isn't anything wrong with it per say, but I would haggle him or her down. I myself would not pay $95 for it, but I might be more willing for $70.

OK I am not yelling! Second: Me and a buddy of mine take a few guys getting out of jail each year and bring them fishing. It is a way to ge\ive back to society and help a guy getting out to learn or remeber how to have fun and get some recreation> We buy a lot of stuff and stockpile it. We bought this from the DICKS STORE in Allentown PA and CABELAS In Hamburg PA, Donated one. BOTH WERE IDENTICAL ( Except Cabelas had the Grey Eschelon and DICKS had the RED One, cosmetic difference only0 and BOTH were mounted on an Allstar Instinct. Maybe it is a regional difference

So just to make sure I go to the ALLSTAR site and there it is, the new entry level ALLSTAR Rodnamed INSTINCT. It is made in China not the USA, Probabbly to compete in the price point vs Fenwick GT and The St Croix Triumph,. Then I go to The Shakesphere Page, And THERE ITS NOT no ALLSTAR Instinct rod on that page.
