Super User Jig Man Posted November 8, 2007 Super User Posted November 8, 2007 I am using 30# Power Pro braid with a 15# Seaguar fluro leader. I have used the uni-uni, Stren, and Albright knots (with and without glue). I fish a lot of rock piles and never go after a hung bait, so I lose quite a few jigs/tubes in a day of fishing. I'd say that 9 out of 10 times when I break off, the line breaks at the braid/fluro knot instead of the knot at the bait. I always wet my fluro with saliva before cinching the knot. Any suggestions?? Super User .RM. Posted November 9, 2007 Super User Posted November 9, 2007 I always wet my fluro with saliva before cinching the knot.Saw an article by Berkley few years back, about saliva and mono (wetting the knot) when left to dry before the lure is cast. Article told that the acids that start the digestive process could weaken the mono enough to cause knot failure. I would imagine the same would/could happen to fluro.FIX: Try using lake water. lubina Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 Jig Man I use the same knot on my braid-fluoro and get exactly the same results, 9 of 10 the brake will be there, it is just the weakest point ( with or without saliva ), it may affect recovering a jig but it is strong enough to hold the fish fight, I'll take that over breaking the rod, at least most of mine are not rated for 30 lbs lines. Super User Jig Man Posted November 9, 2007 Author Super User Posted November 9, 2007 I also wet the San Diego Jam knot that is used to hold the bait. I'd think it should be the one that is the weakest since it is being pulled through metal but I rarely come back with leader. I come back with a braid knot and a dab of fluro. I am beginning to wonder if this fluro is any good for this type of job. Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted November 9, 2007 Super User Posted November 9, 2007 Several months ago I brought this same subject up and was told that my braid was a smaller diameter than my flouro and was cutting into the flouro. Either double up the braid when tying your knots, or increase the size of your flouro. I switched to 30# braid with a 20# flouro and have had no problems since. I tried doubling the braid, but I have a tremor conditions and it was just too much for me. Quote
ABC123 Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 That's just the way it is using a leader on braid. Think of braid as a dull knife, with enough pressure, it will cut. You might see a little more strength out of a braid to mono knot, but in the end, the result will still be the same. It will break at the linking knot first. If you were trying to boat a 5lb fish and the knot was breaking, then that would be cause for concern, but breaking the line to free it, it would be normal for the linking knot to break. Quote
Guest avid Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 I use 50 lb braid, and either 15# mono or 20# flouro. Every knot I tried would slip or break sooner or later. Untill I tried the modified albright. I have not had any problems since. This is your regular albright but when you finish making your wraps going down the line, go back up the line using the same number of wraps. Important- You MUST have your line go out the same way it came in. So this means if you came in from the bottom you go out through the bottom. Now, clinching this knot closed is a little tricky, so EASY DOES IT. you want to avoid having the second layer of wraps bunch up over the first layer. to accomplish this you moisten your fingers and push the wraps up toward the loop. Start at the loop and work your way down. then clinch up from the tag ends, then the main lines, push up some more, then clinch again. If done properly this knot will be surprisingly compact, going through the guides with relative ease. I have not yet had a single failure with this knot. If you have to use glue to secure a knot,//fugedaboudit// It aiin't a knot worthy of the name. Quote
Super User islandbass Posted November 9, 2007 Super User Posted November 9, 2007 This might come as a surprise, but I would actually expect it to break right at the knot as you have discovered. Here is my line of thought: One end: 50# braid Other end: 15 or 20# fluro We all know that the knots by their very nature weaken the line somewhat and pardon the pun, they are the weakest link. For arguements sake, let's just say that there is a 10% loss in line strength at the joining knot. The 15# fluro at the knot is effectively 13.5# line and the braid side is now 45#. Let's add in the cutting factor of the braid at that knot. Although the side of the fluoro at the lure is also at 13.5# strength, there is no braid on that end to influence it. I am willing to bet that more times than not, the breakage should occur at the knot joining the two lines. Just my $0.02. Quote

I just might have to buy some different fluro since I have braid on 10 reels already. I use 50 lb braid, and either 15# mono or 20# flouro.I have not yet had a single failure with this knot. I went out and tied this knot with a rock hanging jig. It should only take a cast or two to get the results. Thanks for the link avid. Quote
Under the Radar Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 I use 50# PP & 17# mono connected with a Bloodknot. Haven't had one fail yet. Even with 15# turtles. lol Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted November 10, 2007 Super User Posted November 10, 2007 Avid, thanks for the link. Looks like a great knot! With my shakey hands, I should easily be able to tie that knot in an hour or so. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted November 10, 2007 Author Super User Posted November 10, 2007 I tried that knot yesterday and it did not fail. Everytime I had to break off it broke below then line to line knot. Mike I don't know how bad your tremors are but it is as easy as any line to line knot I have used. Quote
