Quantum Reels and Rods

I'm looking to buy a couple Quantum reels, rods, and i'm wondering if anyone has experience with them. I am mainly looking at spinning reels such as catalyst, pti energy and so on. The rods I am completely clueless about. If you have any comments about quality and which one you would suggest please reply!

Also I was wondering about cold weather gear. Any suggestions what to get?

I have a Quantum Tour spinning rod and really like it.  Their PT edition rods are also quite good.

I have quantum spinning reels pti 20's kenetic and catalyst and they are very nice- a bit heavy but very smooth and durable.  I own a tour PT casting rod and it is very nice- I got it for my tour PT burner reel for fishing rattle traps- nice combo.  It is good stuff you will like it- especially if you get it for a good price.

While I've never used their rods, their reels are smooth and very nice, but heavier than other reels in the same price range.

The high end Quantum rods use Lamiglas blanks.   I had the first Quantum Tour Edition rods about 15 years ago, and they said 'blank by Lamiglass' (HSX 54 I think?) right on the rod.  They blew away my lightning rods I had before the Quantums.  I would say the PT's are a pretty good rod assuming they are still using Lamiglas as their blank supplier.  As for the reels...their spinning reels seem to hold a lot better reputation than their casting, but I'm still a Shimano/Daiwa guy.

I too prefer my daiwas/shimanos over my quantums- not saying the quantum is a bad reel just my preference .

It is hard to say it. The PT rods are great, I don't have any but I've done plenty of fishing with my partner's

I think that the Accurist PT is one of the best for hard fishing conditions in close cover or anyway pitch/flip is intense.

Like anything else....take what you like and feel comfortable with. The quality is there

I have two of the Energy Pti-a 20 spinning reels and they are awesome.  I can't speak for their rods but I would highly recommend them.

I have two KVD Signature Series Rods (casting) that I like very much. They are a very good bargain.

I have two Quantum casting reels, a Cabo wide spool for salt (have caught cudas to 4 feet on it-performed perfectly-drag is bullet proof-had albacore take 150 yards in one screaming run and drag was solid and smooth as silk all the way) and a Pro PT 7:1 for fresh water casting (salmon to 15 pounds, long hard runs, drag on this one is bullet proof too).

Regarding casting, both models seem to be quite critical to adjustments.  Every lure weight change or type seems to require adjustment, unlike other reels I've used.  I just discovered an easy way to improve them.  The adjustment screw that loads the end of the spool shaft does not have a spring inside it, just a solid washer to provide the contact with the shaft.  Thus it goes from no contact to hard contact in about a tenth of a turn.  By putting the lightest wave washer (from the hardware store bin of hardware)I could find in the adjustment cap UNDER the solid washer (solid washer still contacts the end of the spool) I found that it is less critical of adjustment and gives more of a usable adjustment range.  Some reels use a coil spring in this position, and if I can find one of the right diameter and length, I'll try that-it should work better.

Both reels, exc for comment above, perform flawlessly under really demanding conditions.  I use braid on both.

I pased over Quantum due to the weight of the reels int he size I wanted.  However, the spinning reels I looked at were among the smoothests I've ever handled.  Impressively smooth.

Just noticed today that one of my least favorite spinning reels is a Quantum PT i in 20 size.  It just isn't very smooth compared to the Cabelas/Daiwa Prodigy/Capricorn reels.  After fishing with them, the Quantum always stands out as not being nearly as nice to use.  Bail feels sloppy, although it always works, the drag is fine, it's the roughness on reeling that really is the problem.  It has been maintained well and not used that much, so there is no reason for this problem.

Never used just the regular PT rods, but I have all signature series PT rods and they are absolutely awesome. I seriously like them better than most Loomis' I have owned, you can laugh, but its true. You cant go wrong with the signature series, but they are specifically designed for certain applications, so you cant use one rod for everything.

i have 3 quantum spinners, the catalyst, kinetic, and the boca (for snook and tarpon). i love them. i had 7 quantum baitcasters and i loved them, but i recently switched over to shimano. i can't comment on the rods, because i have never fished them.
