Daiwa Tierra Or Capricorn Spinning Reel

Looking at a size 2000 spinning & these 2 have my interest.  I understand that the Tierra is the updated version of the Capricorn.  I've checked both out & are very, very similar except in color & bail size.  I think the Tierra is slightly lighter than the Capricorn.  The Capricorn is the older model w/ the hardbodyz.  

Price wise the Capricorn is $80 (was around $120 before the Tierra came out) & the Tierra is $115.  

Given these, would I gain anything by getting something new like the Tierra or save some money & get the Capricorn?

Both reels feel smooth, but just wanted some opinions.

I second that.  I have two of them in the 1500 size.  Great for dropshotting.

Thanks guys!  I was on a budget so I went w/ the Capricorn.  I really don't need the waterproof drag, would be nice but have not had problems w/ my other spinning reels in regards to that.

The Capricorn is about an ounce heavier, I can sure feel the difference from the 2 side by side.  Besides those, I think I will enjoy the Capricorn....I wish it had a faster gear ratio though, same w/ the Tierra.

Sorry, guys, I couldn't resist. I got two 2500 Capri's earlier this year when Cabela's had them on sale for 60 bucks apiece. I just tried out the Tierra a bud of mine bought, and it was hard to tell the difference other than his was a larger size and thus heavier. The Tierra might be just a bit smoother, maybe.

A couple of years ago, Tackle Tour did one of their shootouts, comparing the Capricorn to the Stradic; both being about the same price at the time. They gave the nod to the capricorn. Not that that in itself means a heck of a lot.

You won't go wrong with either choice. If you can pick one up one sale, it's just that much better in my book. I'm always in the market for a bargain.

GK, do the same test run in a few months.  Dirk bought a capricorn, great price admittedly but,....this is one of the few comparisons where my cheap butt would absolutely spend the extra dough on the Tierra.  Regarding the Tierras paint job, it does not scratch!!!!  Seriously, I cannot own a reel more than a month without it looking 3 yrs old.  Mine still looks brand new after a complete season.  Aside from performance being flawless, it holds up to LBH beatings.  That's saying something.

I own 2 Capricorns (2000 and 2500), but the older model (silver ), not the orange/copper ones. They are awsome reels for the money. There is no need to buy a more expensive reel, except to show-off.

I don't know how the orange ones compare to the older model, but I don't think Daiwa would drop the quality of engineering of the same model/name product. The question is if they kept the same quality components or used somthing cheaper (like bearings).

You know, the "bottom line"/corporate profits isue...

No doubt, the Tierra is good stuff too.

But since you allready pulled the trigger, enjoy the Capricorn ! It's a bargain.

Good point. Also it should be noted that the Capricorn is now out of production, so somewhere down the line, parts will not be available. I knew that going in, and it does not bother me. I don't use spinning gear near as much as casting gear, so I expect these things to last for a long time, with regular maintenance, of course.

I am happy and ticked about the Tierra's paint job. I agree with LBH...it is indestructable- you literally can't scratch it, and I don't even put it in a reel cover anymore. I'm ticked because my TD-Z's are a reel 3x's as expensive, with a matte metallic paint job, just a different color. The paint on the TD-Z's scratch if you look at them wrong. The Tierra's paint is the most durable of any reel I have owned up until this point, and that is a strong statement. I wonder if the Steez's matte black finish is comparable to the Tierra's in terms of durability.

I returned the Capricorn. I finally had a chance to check out the reel which was on a table on clearance. I then noticed the main spool had a couple nicks on the outer lip on top of the spool. I'm guessing that since this was out that anyone could pick it up, it must have been dropped & the lip of the spool got the brunt of the drop.  This is not cool, I know I could've taken a dremel & polished it out, but why?

So I brought it back today & picked up a Team Daiwa Tierra 2000. Tried it out today & it felt quite nice. Very sturdy & light feeling. The rain started when I was fishing so I didn't catch anything. Bummed me out cuz I wanted to feel how well the Tierra worked. I guess that's for another day....I gotta say that this is the most expensive spinning reel I own.  Well I do have a new Shimano Stradic 1000 that I got last week, but I had some rewards points & 25% off, so that doesn't count as being the more expensive one....
